T60 with 2504 mini dock, 23" & 19" displays -- has desktop icon names blurry

#1 Post by Muse » Wed Jul 18, 2018 2:39 pm

The 23" is the main display and is getting the DVI from the mini-dock. The 19" is getting the VGA. T60's own display is left off. Am running Windows 10 32 bit. All the icons are on the 23" display connected by DVI, the extended desktop to the 19" display run on VGA is empty.

The icon names on the 23" display desktop are blurry. Readable, but it's something of an effort to read them, not like crisp text. If I left click an icon and start moving it from it's location, the icon name becomes beautifully, perfectly crisp, white, but the moment I release the mouse button, dropping the icon back on the desktop, the icon name again becomes blurry.

I searched, tried a lot of things including registry settings, display settings changes in Windows. I watched a couple of videos, nothing has helped. The desktop on my wide T61 display doesn't have this problem. I tried setting the scaling on the main display to other than the recommended 100%. At 125% or 150% the icon names are easier to read but there are effects in my applications that I'm not sure I like. I'm still not getting perfectly clear text, which is what I would like. I can't imagine a good reason why the text can't be presented clear. Am I missing something here?

Yes, W10 is the culprit!

However, when I ran Windows 7 on the machine I was getting delays sometimes a few minutes before I had control of the machine again. Moving to Windows 10 stopped those delays... They were hell, the blurred icon names is an annoyance. I'm not retreating to Windows 7 on that machine. On this machine (a T61) I think I will retreat to Windows 7 because touching the trackpad sometimes causes all windows to tile. All efforts to disable that have failed. Hitting ESC or clicking the window I was working on restores things to as-was, but it's a WTH every time it happens. That behavior is unpredictable, but IIRC it never happened when I was running Windows 7 on this T61.

I guess these are the drivers. All ATI chips from that era have poor to none support under W10.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

I do have a T60 with ATI graphics, however it's running XP and not used a lot. The machine I'm having this problem with is this:

Lenovo T60
1953CTO ThinkPad T Series T60
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5500
Windows 10 Home Premium 32bit
14.1 SXGA+ TFT (Displaying to 23" and 19" LCDs by virtue of model 2504 mini dock)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
3 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory
Intel 330 180GB SSD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Slim
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 WLAN 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless Card 62205ANHMW

I cant help you with the Windows 10 problem (except maybe have you tried changing the font smoothing options?), but this
when I ran Windows 7 on the machine I was getting delays sometimes a few minutes before I had control of the machine again.
sounds like the Device-Initiated Power Management (DIPM) problem that's known to affect some Intel SSDs on the T60 motherboard. DIPM can be disabled with a registry change you should be able to find with some searching.

If the current Synaptics driver that is pushed trough WU is still version 16.2.19.7... yeah; that's pure garbage.

I force-install versions 16.1.1.0, that does away with most nonsense.

The download was named 6hgx58ww.exe

The problem with the blurry text will occur if you either run two different screens with different scaling settings, or if you change the scaling settings without logging out and back in.

My solution is to always run all displays on the same scaling.

And yes, it's a Windows 10 issue, because none of the past versions even had this feature that allowed each display to have different scaling.
