T60/Intel Graphics Questions

#1 Post by Libre_ME » Wed Aug 01, 2018 1:12 pm

Hi, i have some questions about these machines.
1) Is the T2400/32-bit CPU the only T60 that uses the Intel graphics or are there other cpus available with Intel graphics?
2)Can the 32-bit T2400 cpu be swapped out to a 64-bit cpu?

No, there are indeed other different processors that came paired with the GMA 950.

Yes, the Merom Core 2 Duo processors are what you should be looking for. Those are guaranteed to have EM64T/is 64-bit capable, an example would be the T7600. Do remember to update your BIOS first, though.

Thanks for your reply! I looked up the T7600 cpu on thinkwiki and it seems only available on T60p. I'm researching which T60 to buy, with Intel graphics chip, as I'm wanting to change the bios to Libreboot. Maybe T60ps can be Librebooted, but I thought I read T60 boards only, somewhere. Also, I'm into low voltage and ultra low voltage cpus , but I know that these cpus don't have pins to plug into a T60 boards cpu socket, as they are soldered onto the X-series boards. So far the only T60, non-P, that I've found with Intel graphics chip is the T2400 board. By your answer, it's not exactly clear to me, I assume that the T2400 board, being 32-bit, is not compatible with 64-bit cpus?!

All T60 or T60p motherboards can take many CPUs, from CoreSolo T1300/1400, to CoreDuo T2300/2300e/2400/2500/2600/2700 to Core2Duo T5200/5300/5500/5600 and T7200/7400/7600.
And they can have Intel graphics, or ATI X1300/X1400/V5200/V5250 graphics.
Pick your choice.

If you did not know, you can always under-volt to get a 'low-voltage' processor. There is no point for an ultra-low voltage or a low-voltage processor to be in a T60, honestly. Unless you want reduced heat production and better battery life, then you could always under-volt to get the same thing as a low-voltage processor. Throttlestop is what you should be looking for.

I have seen people installing BGA processors on an interposer with pins, though. Very creative, but again, you can always under-volt the processor to get the same thing as a low-voltage processor.

Sorry for being unclear, but the T2400 board itself is compatible with any 64-bit Core 2 Duo processor. No matter what processor the motherboard was originally installed with, it can take any 64-bit Core 2 Duo provided that you have flashed the latest BIOS firmware.

@Screamer Thanks for taking the time to post all of that useful info! OK, so I'll opt for the T2400 T60 and swap to a 64-bit cpu. Undervolting, etc. is Windows only territory. My understanding is that you can't do this in Linux, which is all that I use anymore.

@Annecy Thanks for posting that link, it was a good read. I particularly like the post about Coreboot allowing 3.75GB of memory use instead of the 3GB Win. threshold.
