T6x+SSD & Windoze (7) SwapFile: Where ???

#1 Post by Annecy » Mon Aug 20, 2018 9:47 pm

SSD or UltraBay :?:

SO ...
I (now) have ... a couple/few T6x ThinkPads ... in my rotation ...
A couple even have an SSD ... in the main HDD-bay ... with (Win7) OS ...
I am (still) NOT sure ... where
to (best) "put/situate" the Windoze (7) SwapFile :?:

Back during my XP "daze" ... in the "noughts" ...
the "thing to do" seemed to be ...
putting the SWAPFILE on the UltraBay HDD
(due to being an available 2nd/non-OS HDD)

Now ... with an SSD in the main HDD-bay ...
the choice seems to be between ...
speed/performance/responsiveness ...
& the (expected) Life of the SSD

With a (MiddletonBIOS) T61 ...
the (SATAII) SSD is MATERIALLY faster than the/(any :!:) SATAI UltraBay HDD ...
HOWEVER ~ "using up" SSD writes/LIFE with a SWAPFILE
is commonly ... "derided" ... as an option ...
(based on much of what I've seen/read ... @n the WWW) :BAAAD!:

In a T60 "situation" ...
both the main HDD-bay & UltraBay have the same SATAI "interface",
SO the speed/performance/responsiveness "differential"
is (seemingly/much) LESS material/significant ...

Also ... WHAT about "size settings" for the SWAPFILE :?:
and should one choose a "SystemManaged" or FIXED SwapFile size :?:
My T43 has 2gb RAM ~ so an ≈ 3.5gb SWAPFILE is reasonable ...
What about on 4gb & 8gb (&16gb) "systems" :?:

I'm less "concerned" about placing the SwapFile
on the main HDD-bay in my T420s (with (W7x64) on the mSATA SSD ...)
The T420s mSATA is SATAII ... while the main HDD-bay & UltraBay are SATAIII ...
Is PUTTING a SWAPFILE on an/y SSD (ever) "worth it" :?: :o

Absolutely not, IMO/IME.

I haven't had a swap file on an SSD-powered system for years now and the world hasn't come to an end.

RAM is inexpensive nowadays. Max out the system(s) and forget all about swap files.

(at least as far as the YES or NO question ...)
Regarding the size question:

"You can reduce it to about 2/3rds of memory size if you have more than around 4GB,"
I've (heretofore) been running W7(x86) ...
with either 2gb or 4gb RAM ... & no SSD ...

Eventually ... after hours ... & HOURS of browsing ...
the "machine"/OS becomes ... SLUGGISH ...
the RAM/PAGE/SWAP FILE is bulging ... around 2.7gb ...
and I have to purge the SwapFile ...
(usually by closing/restarting my browser/s ...)

I can't "imagine" what Windoze would do ...
on a 4gb system ... withOUT a SWAPFILE
I don't see/understand how ...
simply running off of an SSD
would make killing-off the SWAPFILE ... viable :?:

My T420s W7x64Pro has 8gb RAM ...
I might give the NO SWAPFILE experience a try/chance ...
on that Thinkpad

The fact that you don't understand how something occurs doesn't take anything away from a validity of the practice itself. Nothing on this planet happens "by itself", there's a lot more involved in a *proper* SSD system setup than just getting rid of a swap file.

Presuming that it's also running an SSD, try it. You may like it.

Swap comes into play when your OS and applications run out of physical memory.
So if you have 4GB of RAM and have a bunch of stuff running at the same time, you could be using much more than 4GB of RAM. The system will "swap" RAM to/from the drive, virtual RAM.

If you have a LOT of RAM, or more RAM than the OS and programs use, then the need for a swap file is reduced/eliminated.
But there were programs that would not properly function without a swap file, for whatever reason.

I have not done this for a long while, but I recall there was a way to monitor swap file usage.

For spinning HD, the optimal was to put the swap file on a separate drive.
But with SSD, there isn't the latency problem and head contention of spinning HD, so I would put the swap file on the SSD.

Since you have T61p, increase ram to 8GB, and disable page file entirely. Gain space on your SSD and reduce writes. Just don't go crazy on the number of tabs you have open.
