Great games for the T60P ?

#1 Post by 128MB » Sun Sep 02, 2018 6:03 am

After finishing my T60P i stopped caring for a few months because i didnt use it, now i tried the good old StarWars battlefront 2 on it and it runs buttery smooth even at high graphical settings!
The gpu runs at about 75-80, no mods just lubed the fan and proper thermal paste.

Any other great games that runs fine on the T60P ?

Need For Speed undergound 2 runs fine in medium graphics on 1024x768. But the poor old ati starts to cook itself at 120 degrees.

1. Try to load in some overclocking tool (i.e. Trixx); those GPUs overclock nicely with no voltage added.
2. I ran Anno 1404 smoothly, so it generally should work nicely :) same for Guitar Hero: Legends of Rock or NFS: Carbon. Warcraft 3 etc. legacy games :)
3. You can be just unlucky if your GPU runs that hot. At full stress on 15" it should keep stably somewhere around higher 70C, and on 14,1" in some mid-80s. There was a known issue with these boards, some of them ran unacceptably hot leading to thermal shutdowns. I've had one some time ago, with gaming resulting in higher 90s in Celsius. Cleaning up your heatsink and regreasing might do lots of good, as will undervolting the CPU. If not running x64 system (and whats the point with the mobo limited to 3gigs of ram) T2600 will run reasonably cooler than its 64-bit counterpart.

I cleaned the heatsink and pads with ipa and applied new arctic mx4, still runs crazy hot when gaming.

Was hoping to do the copper shim mod but dont know what thickness to get.

My recommendation would be to use a 0.8mm thick copper shim, preferably the 15mm x 15mm x 0.8mm copper shims if possible. Using that worked out well in my R61i, when I was too lazy to apply thermal paste.

Just remember to apply thermal paste on both sides of the copper shim, it is needed to get the best temperatures out of it.

Change the fan. There is a big chance yours is damaged. Or you have a lemon. T0p tends to idle at high temps, but high = middle 50s for this system.

I tried fans from ebay but they are either crap or damaged in shipping.

I completely cleaned mine with compressed air, ipa and a cotton swab then applied arctic mx4.

The temps are definietely too high. Check both CPU and GPU temps on idle and under load (Orthos / Furmark) and report back. I should have some genuine T60p cooling assemblies left, you could try it on mine to check if this works well.

Or, get a nvs140m board and swap it. It runs way cooler, and undervolts nicely.

What screen size is it?

My bet is it's a lemon. 70C under load is a very good temp for this CPU, which suggests that the cooling unit is fine (unless GPU heatpipe is broken). 50C at idle is normal temp as well. 14,1" units tend to work a bit warmer due to limitted space.

How come it hits 120C without thermal shutdown? Which software are you using to check this? I have found out that on some systems tpfancontrol is giving out false measurements.

im using tp fan control and it hits 120 degrees when playing need for speed underground 2 on high detail but it doesnt shut down :)
gonna try some other temp apps later.

the fan exhaust is hot but the keyboard or palm do not get any heat transfer.

I ordered copper shims and new thermal pads, will post back when i fitted them.

Tried HWinfo and TPFancontrol at the same time, the temps were identical from every sensor.

I played some battlefront, unreal tournament and gta san andreas, buttery smooth on the highest resolution the gpu never went above 73 !

whats going on ? :D

Played a lot on 15" T60p. Copper shim GPU mod and custom fan profile by IBMECW, GPU temperature did not exceed 80C at max fan RPM.
I tested these games on it and had no problems with such settings:
-GTA Vice City / San Andreas (1600x1200 max);
-Max Payne / Max Payne 2 (1600x1200 max);
-Postal 2 / Paradise Lost (1600x1200 max);
-Driver Parallel Lines (1600x1200 max);
-Flatout 1 / Flatout 2 (1600x1200 max);
-Return To Castle Wolfenstein (1600x1200 max);
-Crashday (1600x1200 max);
-Half-Life 2 and Episodes (1600x1200 high);
-STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl (static lighting, 1024x768 max);
-Street Racing Syndicate (1024x768 max);
-NFS U / U2 / MW (1024x768 high);
-Far Cry (1024x768 high);
-Battlefield 2 (1024x768 high);
-Doom 3 (1024x768 medium);
-FEAR (1024x768 medium);
-Black Mesa 2012 (1024x768 medium);
-Call of Duty Modern Warfare (1024x768 medium);
-Just Cause (1024x768 medium);
-Fallout 3 / New Vegas (800x600 medium and blur);
-Burnout Paradise (800x600 low);
-and yes, it can run Crysis! 1024x768 low are playable.

I'm still in awe for this little laptop, it performs miles better than the desktop i had back in the day which i dragged to lanparty's to play UT2004.
My laptop at the time was painfully slow and could only play some games like counterstrike 1.6 on the lowest settings.

Love solitare, minesweeper. Space Cadet Pinball is the greatest. Try them out :lol: . Seriously, Space Cadet pinball is pretty fun though.

Rollercoaster Tycoon is much better played on an older machine with a 4:3 display. Probably very nice on a T60p.

Here are my favourites (only on a normal T60 though, with Ati x1400, but that means that on T60p they would run even better):

Simcity4
StarCraft, + Broodwar (needed patch for Win 8)
Civilization 4
Richard Burns Rally
GTR 2
SWAT 4, + Expansion
Heroes 2, 3
Sonic Mania
Worms Armageddon (needed mod for Win 8)
EDuke32 (Duke Nukem 3D mod with improvements)
Doomsday 1.10.4 (a mod for Doom, Heretic, Hexen with nice improvements, for modern systems, later versions of this engine don't work though)
DosBOX (for all the older dos games)
Trespasser (with mod for DirectX 9)

All these games run smooth, and look amazing on the 15 inch 4:3 flexview screen.
Thinkpad T60, 15" Flexview, with mods (Xiphmont's LED mod, T500 heatsink, cpu undervolt, reinforced frame)
Thinkpad T601, 15" Flexview, with mods (Xiphmont's LED mod, T500 heatsink, cpu undervolt, reinforced frame)
Thinkpad X32
Thinkpad T22
