Intel 4695AGN "Windows Inbox Drivers" compatible with Windows 10?

#1 Post by MEA707 » Mon Sep 10, 2018 11:37 am

I know there's been many discussions about the Intel 4965AGN WiFi card not supported in Windows 10.

I came across this Intel page that references standard "in the box" drivers that ship with Windows and lists the 4965AGN as supported in Windows 10 via these drivers.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... rking.html

Has anyone had any luck with this?

I am not in a specific hurry as I'm happy running my T61 with Windows 7, but I know Windows 7 support is coming to an end in about 16 months, so looking at options. I don't really want to open it up to replace the WiFi card.

Go to Device Manager, disable PCMCIA device, then uninstall 4965 listed under network adapters and restart the machine.

Just to be clear, I have not upgraded it to Windows 10 yet, so I am not facing this problem yet.

However, why would I disable PCMCIA device and then uninstall the driver?

Because Ricoh Cardbus Controller will occupy the resources needed by 3945/4965 in Windows 10.
Why asking about the problem you don't have?

Because when/if I upgrade my T61 to Windows 10, I will have this problem. This has been the primary reason now why I have held back on upgrading.

So is the 4965AGN Windows 10 problem over a resource issue and not a driver incompatibility from Intel?

So by disabling the cardbus controller, using the latest Windows 7 drivers for the 4965AGN will not be an issue in Windows 10?

There is no reason to upgrade T61 to Windows 10, except if you are looking for trouble. 4965 will work if you apply described routine, but it will still have problems after waking from sleep mode - 4965 would not be able to start. Intel gave up providing further support for 3945/4965 and there are no official drivers available for them, so just don't do that.

Thanks for the information. I actually would rather not upgrade it to Windows 10. I'm just thinking ahead, after January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to Windows 7, so either at that time I chuck the laptop away and never use it again, or continue to use it at risk.

Either that, or I guess replace the card...

Just look how many people are still using Windows XP, which support ended in 2014. I would never trade Win7 for Win10 for sure, as it is by far the worst Microsoft OS ever. If you still insist on Win10, just apply Middleton bios upgrade and use any of the modern wifi cards. For example, both my T61p and T601 have 7260hwm cards installed. Much better than 4965 for sure. Much faster, lower power consumption, lower heat dissipation.

Is the 7260hwm a 3 wire or 2 wire card? I was looking at the Atheros AR9380 which is a 3-wire just like the 4965agn and is Windows 10 compatible.

It's a two wire card. Just don't use white cable, isolate the connector and you'll be fine. Connect grey cable to main, black one to aux port of your wifi card. AR9380 is also a good choice, but it's N, not AC card like 7260hwm.

I would recommend checking this thread out if you insist on keeping your 4695AGN and Windows 10.

Supposedly, you can get away with using a Fujistu driver:

viewtopic.php?p=821822#p821822

Once you install the driver it's a good idea to go to power management tab in device manager and disable the power saving features (so it doesn't boot you from your network if your PC goes to sleep. So in theory, this should work. I have never put it into practice as I already upgraded to an Intel 5100 Wifi link before he responded. In any event, Windows 10 is a great upgrade and I would highly recommend it if you get your wireless adaptor woes sorted out.

Honestly, within the "N" range, AR9380 would get my vote every day of the week and every hour of the day. I've been using it for years now in both my personal systems and custom builds and have had stellar experiences with it.

4965AGN is hot-running and outdated in just about every/any respect.

Having said that, I don't - nor will I ever - use W10, so YMMV in this respect.

Windows 10 is great on a Thinkpad. I've been using it for years now with no trouble (other than this specific wireless issue which is now resolved)

I'm just curious how you measure the WiFi cards' heat? You say it overheats but I've never noticed any heat whatsoever above the keyboard
Is there a sensor or something you are picking up on in AIDA64 or something like that?

There is a super easy fix to this sleep mode issue.
1)GO to device manager
2)Right click your wireless card choose properties
3)Click the power management tab
4)UNCHECK the option "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

BOOM you are done! Also don't really know why people are telling you to stay away from Windows 10. I have had it on my Thinkpad T61p for almost a year and it's served me very well.

Count yourself lucky. Many of us here have had a very different experience, especially in systems that are physically smaller, such as X61.

There's a number of threads documenting this issue all over the web.

Why do you think the Ricoh Cardbus controller will harbor resourses? I can no longer test since I upgraded to the Intel 5100 Wifi link but prior to the upgrade I never had a resource issue. And my T61p has been running windows 10 for about a year now with no resource problems. This isn't like Windows XP. Windows 10 has a much better handle on resources.

Because I know it does, that's the way I solved the problem after installing Win10 for tryout. After few days I killed it by disk format and gone back to Win7. Never again.

Reviving this old thread of mine to mention what I ultimately decided to do now that Windows 7 has reached its EOL.

I decided NOT to install Windows 10, due to another of reasons in including the WiFi driver issue, I went with Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon, my first experience with Linux, and I'm pretty glad I went down this path.

While Linux isn't perfect, it runs on the T61, much better than Windows 7 even did, it's essentially given this 12-year old laptop another life as a good computer for basic use general use.

If anyone has any Linux tips for the T61, please feel free to share!
