PSA: nVidia equipped T61/p can overclock LCD

Hello again all,

I just thought I'd mention, for those of you who like smoother desktop graphics, you can overclock your T61/p LCD using the nVidia control panel, by creating a custom resolution with a custom refresh rate. Of course, your overclocked refresh will vary depending on your panel. Seems like I won the lottery, I have stable overclock from 60hz to 120hz, making my desktop graphics ultra smooth. Confirmed 120hz by UFO test. Try your luck and see!

Thanks! Looks like I can only get 61.000 HZ from my T61p. 1680 x 1050 32 bit.

Oh well, it was a fun waste of time. lol

Like many things in life, some things are just left to chance. My M18x panel cannot overclock past 65Hz, while my M15x could do 120Hz all day. Luck of the draw I suppose. Squeezing everything out of the T61p has been fun!

I think this is the only advantage of TN panels above IPS. Their maximum possible refresh rates are almost always better. I am almost 100% sure that we could not boost the frequency on a flexview frankenpad lcd by any meaningful margin.

Maybe this is just me, and I'm not so technically inclined, but isn't there an upper limit on the amount of bandwidth LVDS can deliver? Wouldn't 120hz mean double the bandwidth?

Anyone overclocked their refresh rate with X3100 vga in T61? I couldn't find the right drivers or the tools to do it.

This thread only applies to nVidia graphics, not Intel graphics like X3100.

Any chance if you know if there is any solution of threads that applies to intel x3100 about the subject ?

Just overclocked the 1280x800 60hz panel of my T61 to 1440x900 90hz. Works perfectly.

Edit : Just tried 1680 x 1050 at 90hz, it works just fine as well :)

While you can overclock the refresh rate of a LCD panel to actually make it refresh faster, overclocking the resolution won't really make your screen have more pixels.
The pixels on the LCD panel are physically laid out and you can see with your own eyes even when the LCD is turned off, and that can't be changed no matter what.
But what I think you have is a 1440x900 image downscaled to 1280x800 and if you run a checkerboard pattern test on the LCD you will see the pixels don't line up.

I tested a checkerboard pattern and it lines up and shows correct. Btw i am %100 sure that i am using 1680x1050 resolution in desktop and in games and benchmark apps reporting and running at 1680x1050 eventho whatismyscreenresolution.com and similar websites reports it being 1522x951.

None of this makes absolutely any sense.

For sure you can mess with the timings making it report different resolution, but it will just force the screen to downscale. This might explain why websites report bogus resolutions like 1522x951. Some LCDs come from the factory with the ability to receive and automatically downscale higher than native resolution. It won't show up as crooked lines in a checkerboard pattern, just as blurry text and width artifacts in thin lines.

Although relying on a recorded, upscaled, downscaled and compressed video to assess these things is inherently inaccurate, you can still observe some of the artifacts I referred to, for instance at 0:19, where the i in "Anti" and in "Aliasing" are not the same thickness. There are other examples as well.

While it may not be as smooth as 1680x1050 native resolution, it is still amazing that it can be done at all.

Which panel is it, by the way?

Well besides in my opinion unless you run in Windows 7, the 128MB of VRAM on anything T61/p but the 15.6" board will really struggle on anything above WXGA anyway.
Running WSXGA+ in Windows 10 with just 128MB of VRAM means you really have to worry about how many things you can open at once or things are just suddenly going to lag when you go over 128MB and start to use the DDR2 onboard RAM as the VRAM.
I thought you can just do a custom resolution in the NVidia control panel and always have it downscale to WXGA by the video card with a WXGA active resolution and it would all work just fine.
It's only the refresh rate that could be overclocked. You can't fabricate more physical pixels on the LCD by just overclocking it when there are only 3840 columns and 800 rows of subpixels fabricated on the LCD itself.

It is an AUO B141EW04 V7 panel

The text shows fine completely uniform if the dpi is set to %125 but i like it smaller and it was set to %110 when i recorded the video. Can't complain at all. 8)

It appears that this feature has been supported for some time. nVidia calls it Dynamic Super Resolution, and AMD - Virtual Super Resolution.

I wonder if this is what it is or whether there is more at play here.
