Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
Other than being able to run 64bit apps, is there much advantage to replacing a T2500 with say a T7200 or T7600? I've currently got a T2500 w/ 3GB RAM, Windows 10 32bit, and an 80GB HDD. Gonna replace the HDD with an SSD soon, but I'm surprised how well it runs as-is.
I've read these units can't take more than 4GB RAM, which if true, suggests to me the cpu upgrade is probably a waste of time.

Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
There isn't much, and the most you will get out of that, is just a very slight increase in instructions-per-clock in comparison to the Core Duo generation. You could have a look at the benchmarks for the T2700 versus the T7600, here. The performance difference in my eyes, is not quite worth the upgrade.
Right, they can't use more than 4GiB due to the 82945PM/82945GM memory controller hub's addressing limitations. The swap is no waste of time though, but that is only if 64-bit applications are factored into your usage.
If you want to push the T60's platform to its limits, you should try buying an expensive T7600G [SL9U5] (unlocked multiplier) to overclock it.

Thanks for the reply. I will probably leave the CPU as-is then.
I may replace the heatsink with one from a W500. I've read they fit and can bring temps down a bit. My CPU will get upwards of 80C at load, and the ATI gpu as well.

Heh... at the prices that T7200 change hands nowadays just grab one and use it as an excuse to re-paste the system.
Be careful with the W500 heatsink, though. It's not a perfect fit.

Not terribly involved, but I'm not keen on smacking keyboards with a rubber mallet in the least...your machine, your mallet, your call...as for myself, I'll stick with the stock heatsink.ThorOfAsgard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:04 amIs it terribly involved to make it fit? Or do you just mean the keyboard might bulge a bit until I smack it a few times with a rubber mallet?

Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
No, just a few modifications that should be done to not cripple the heatsink's effectiveness. One of them might involve using the T61's heatsink brackets, since the T60's stock heatsink bracket is too tall for it to be used. A rather risky idea to improve the heatsink's coverage of the graphics chip, would be to bend it till it makes contact with the graphics chip.ThorOfAsgard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:04 amIs it terribly involved to make it fit? I also heard that the older ATI graphics chips, used in the R60/T60 had a higher height compared to the ones used in the T500/W500. Which means, doing the bending might be necessary for optimal contact with the graphics chip used in the T60. In my opinion, I would not settle for this, and I would buy a T61p's heatsink instead. The T61p's heatsink doesn't require these kind of modifications, and only needs a small cut near the T60's heatsink bracket. Notice the blue colored areas of the T60's heatsink bracket? That is the part that you need to cut or grind off, without using a rubber mallet of course.
Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
I can confirm that, practiced a couple of weeks ago.
Definetely +1 on T61p cooling assembly.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
little off topic -- I always get a kick out of Intel's use of the Core Solo processor.
My uncle used to work for IBM and I would always give him a hard time for being stuck, at the time, with a T60 core SOLO.

Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
I'm curious if the T61p cooler is different from the standard T61 (for discrete gpu).
Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
I have a T61 not p 14.1" 4:3 with the NVS 140m and it uses the same three heatpipe cooler as the T61p. I think the Dedicated graphics T61 and T61p use the same heatsinks at least in the 4:3 and 15.4" versions.
I wonder what's faster Intel Core Solo or Celeron 575 that came in my R500.

Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
I would do a frankenpad build if I were you. The T61/p performs WAY better than the (T61/p can have quad cores if mod is performed) T60/p and if you do a frankenpad you also have the possibility to hackintosh if you have Nvidia graphics (Can be done with intel but, on more modern versions of mac OS intel X3100 graphics acceleration is not 100% supported).

The question isn't which is faster, the question is which drives you to insanity faster.

Thor
I'm confused, are you on a T60 or T61?
Cuz on a T61, I can run 8GB of RAM (2x4GB). I have two with 6GB running Win7-64bit. Before I got the 2nd T61, I had both 4GB modules in one T61 to max it at 8GB.

Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
Core Duo CPUs were only available on T60, so that should answer the question. Later batch T60 and all T61 used Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Re: Core Duo to Core 2 Duo worthwhile?
It isn't, as they both utilize the same heatsink.ThorOfAsgard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:27 pmI'm curious if the T61p cooler is different from the standard T61 (for discrete gpu).
Here is an image of the 15.4" 16:10 T61p's heatsink (FRU 42W2028), and here is an image of the 14.1" 4:3 T61's discrete heatsink (FRU 42W2820). Apart from the different FRU labels, there are no noticeable differences between them.
