Battery connector replacement

#1 Post by GunslingerThink » Thu Dec 13, 2018 10:37 am

After I've replaced the motherboard on my T61, unpleasant shutdowns started to occur when the laptop is moved being on battery power. It can shut down when I just move it harsh enough, and it probably wouldn't power on after I've carried it in a bag. I've discovered a possible reason - broken little thing in the battery connector. I want to solder off an exact connector from my other motherboard and use it to replace the broken one.

Image Image

1) Could the broken thing be the reason of shutdowns in the first place? It doesn't really seem to do anything.

2) Are main and UltraBay battery connectors identical? They seem to be, but I'd rather make sure.

3) Is it safe to use my solderer as the connector pins on the motherboard are pretty small compared to solderer's tip?

4) Anything else I should know?

I doubt very much that the broken piece causes the shutdown.
Both connectors are identical, but IMHO it's not necessary to swap it.
Check the sliderss that hold the battery in place, that is more likely the problem.
And for soldering you really should look for a finer tip.

They seem to be in order. No signs of something else broken off.

I have some copper wire, so I can make something like this. Would that be better?

That's something I'll have to pay for, isn't it?

I decided not to do it with my solderer, but to find someone from whom I could borrow a better one. Meanwhile, I invented a temporary kolkhoz way to keep the battery in its place:

Have a look at the battery where those pins meet. It's possible one or more of the contacts in there are spread and aren't making as good a contact as they once did.

Does it still shutdown if you hold the battery in and move the machine around?
