t60p display disappointment, alternatives?

#1 Post by ifncoa » Mon Apr 22, 2019 3:30 pm

Recently occurred to me after using an old Pentium II machine (with an equally old 22” CRT) for a few days how much i like 4x3 displays. So i went on the hunt for a good 4x3 laptop. Of course that leads me to the t60p.

scored one off ebay in decent shape with a core 2 duo (one less thing to upgrade) with the promise of a 1600x1200 display which per the wiki, should be IPS. perfection. Unfortunately the machine came with a 1400x1050 display... not IPS but one of the worst TN abominations I have ever witnessed. Luckily, the seller has accepted a return.

i was looking at parts availability but they have all but dried up, not surprising given the age of the machine. are there any options around on where to source parts? i was thinking if i go down the rabbit hole might as well do the t61board swap as well.

There are T60 and T60p models in 14.1", 15", and 15.4" flavors. Only the 15" models have IPS screens. Generally every 15" T60 will have a 1400x1050 IPS screen, while most T60p have 1600x1200 IPS but some have the 1400x1050 IPS.

Unfortunately, there are also 15" 1024x768 TN screens in low-end T60 models.

And since 15" 1400x1050 and 1600x1200 TN screens exist, it's possible to find one unexpectedly if it was swapped in, after market, by someone unaware of the quality differences...

But your main point is correct - only 15" T60/p have chance of having IPS.

Well you were simply unlucky. Very unlucky.

Try out asking here on the forum. As for 4:3 display, the best possible option without the mod is a Boe-Hydis UXGA model from T60p, but it is difficult to get one. With some (heavy) modding a Hydis UXGA panel w/LED backlight AFFS panel can be mounted in such system. I have at least one spare R61 4:3 machine sporting this panel for sale (and a new one, not used at any point). This strips you out of ATI option, but allows you to use Penryns, touchpad-free palmrest and 8gigs of RAM :) T60p's were prone to graphics chip failure, I find it actually harder to find a working T60p than T61p.
