T61 random shutdown and not booting

#1 Post by Stimov » Fri Apr 26, 2019 11:12 am

Just installed Windows 7, got it all updated and then it started just shutting down like the power was pulled while it was plugged in. No clue what’s going I plan on reinstalling it later when I have time, will update thread. If anyone else has experienced these issues and found a way to fix it please let me know, thanks.

Could you tell us a bit more about the machine itself ? What's the 7-character model number displayed on the same sticker that holds the serial number and production date on the bottom of the laptop ?

could be easy fix, could need a motherboard, but we can't begin without knowing exactly what you have

T61 6463-CTO, T8300 with Windows 7. I already tried different RAM and I'm going to try a different hard drive later, the only other modification I have done was add a fingerprint reader by swapping the front bottom panel.

Following the S/N on the bottom sticker is a date: YY/MM e,g, 07/11 (=2007/November)
If your YY/MM is less/older than 08/08 (2008/August), most likely your GPU is the evildoer.

08/09 so i know it's Intel 965 and I'm currently typing on it but only once has the shutdown been because of the GPU and it was for an outdated driver. So what should I do? I do have a large number of laptops if I need to swap out.

In the last few years, whenever I installed an OS, I always used W7-Pro/SP1 from a Lenovo Recovery set.
After that, the very first thing I do is set "Windows Updates" to NEVER.
Then manually download/install drivers for any yellow-marked items in Device Manager.
The only updates they ever get after that are antivirus and webbrowser versions.
Many of my laptops have been running like that for 3 years or more, and never gave a problem.

I grabbed another laptop from 08/06, would that work better for me or should I try and find a T61p?
