Got a T60 at flea market, need battery/charger

#1 Post by Windfall » Tue Jul 02, 2019 4:06 pm

I got a t60 for ten bucks. It's in amazing shape (The XP Professional sticker is blemish free, like it sat in a box all it's life), and I wanted to put it to use. I'm not exactly sure what model it is, but it says Type 1951-47U on the bottom. It doesn't have a battery, in fact, I have no idea if it works or not. But I couldn't resist. What battery is recommended for this machine? What charger? Could I use a 19V adpater, or a 12v, despite it saying "20v"?

And finally, any tips on getting this thing going?

Thanks, Windfall

Thinkpad Battery 41+ (6-cell) or 41++ (9-cell).

No. Use only a genuine Lenovo 20V gray round barrel plug charger (65W/90W) or a genuine Lenovo travel charger. You should be able to find used working ones easily and cheaply online.

Thanks for the speedy response.

I'll see about that location, though I thought I provided that when I registered.

As far as upgrades (CPU, more modern WiFi(though I could just use a USB dongle), RAM upgrades, screen?) go, is there anything I should consider? Just going to be running the stock XP Pro install. Might get an SSD if possible.

Thanks, Windfall

I'd suggest you start reading the T6x forum, it offers virtually everything you may want to know.

Regarding CPU upgrades and standard features: see https://thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T60

The T60 uses the Intel 945 chipset, and its CPUs are Socket M. The Core 2 Duo T7600 is the fastest you can get.

The T60 has a BIOS whitelist for the WLAN slot, preventing you from installing non-approved cards. However, a modified BIOS (referred to as Zender BIOS) to remove said whitelist.

The WLAN slot only has PCIe signals. This means that the Bluetooth part of a WLAN + Bluetooth combo card will not work (almost all BT cards are USB-based). Many newer wifi cards need to have pin 20 on the miniPCIe edge connector be covered/taped over for the wifi radio to work.

Max usable RAM is around 3GB even if you install two 2GB RAM sticks. It's a combination of chipset and BIOS limitations that cause this.

I don't recommend using Windows XP unless that T60 doesn't connect to the Internet and no USB drives are plugged into it. XP is very outdated and probably has unpatched security vulnerabilities.

That is mostly FUD, I think. XP is outdated, yes, and its UI is not as nice as that of Win7, but Microsoft has been patching all serious vulnerabilities even after XP support has ended. Win7 may not run so well on a T60, especially one with an Intel GPU.

Wow nice machine!

I had one that I put an intel T7600 and 4gb ram into.
Even though it would only detect 3gb ram the machine ran Debian+XFCE perfectly.

May I direct your attention to Libreboot? https://libreboot.org/
It is a fully libre bios that is 100% compatible with your hardware, and loads grub as its payload.
If you are already comfortable with Linux and GRUB it would be a fun project.

Thanks for all your help and input. I look forward to getting this machine going, and possibly use it for Autocad 2000 and Macromedia Flash 8 Pro!

At some point (if it's allowed), I'll post a complete log of what I've done.

Thanks!

+1 for freedom, also GNU/Linux is much less bloated (runs faster) than Windows.

Unfortunately, I don't think that someone who is excited to run AutoCAD and/or Macromedia Flash(!) is concerned much with freedom. lol
All good things are Wild and Free.

What is free software and why is it so important for society?

(2019) I am still on the lookout for for T/X60's with Intel graphics (or chassis, displays, parts) to make Libreboot machines out of. Kindly PM me if you are willing to part with anything.
