Libreboot on a ThinkPad T60 with ATI Graphics?

#1 Post by nightninja96 » Thu Aug 08, 2019 8:45 am

Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to libreboot a ThinkPad T60 that has ATI graphics? I have been researching it and people are say both yes and no... Still not sure if it’s possible.
All input appreciated :D

As far as I know, you can't because video bios on ATI have copyright. So, no "libre" video bios.

It is theoretically possible, however no one has reverse engineered the ATI VGABIOS, whereas they have for the Intel VGABIOS (or it was open to begin with; not sure which).

What is free software and why is it so important for society?

(2019) I am still on the lookout for for T/X60's with Intel graphics (or chassis, displays, parts) to make Libreboot machines out of. Kindly PM me if you are willing to part with anything.

There is native initialization for Intel graphics (probably based on the chipset documentation provided by Intel), but none for ATI, so you really need the ATI VGA BIOS.
