Bad LCD ribbon?

#1 Post by portsample » Thu Aug 15, 2019 1:15 am

Broke a hinge the other day on my T61. After replacing it, I fired the laptop up no problem, logged in, pressed the top of the screen slightly to adjust the angle of the laptop monitor and suddenly the whole screen went to a dim blue. Rebooted and rather than seeing the bios start-up, screen was dark gray with sparkly pixels uniformly scattered about. Shut down, opened the laptop and reseated the video ribbon connector on the motherboard. Rebooted. Colors now look slightly washed out. Adjusting the angle of the screen will caused the LCD to hiccup and show erratic bands of misfiring pixels. I assume that the LCD ribbon has worn out. Monitor is sxga+, can a cable from a low res LCD be swapped in? Anyone else had this happen?

For a T6x yes as long as the ribbon cable is from the same dimension as your current SXGA+ panel (14.1" vs 15", widescreen vs not), you should be fine.
Did you try reseating the connector on the LCD end? You need a piece of tape securely applied on top of the connector on the LCD end of the cable, otherwise the LVDS connector can pop loose during normal use (at best your screen would suddenly go pure white or pure black, at worst damaging your motherboard)
Also, try fiddling around with the panel itself. If you are unfortunate this can also be the ribbon cables on the LCD itself getting faulty.

Cable connection on the LCD end had worked loose. All better now. Thanks for the suggestion.
