T60, ATI radeon X1300 issues with Xubuntu 18.04LTS

My T60 runs Xubuntu 18.04LTS. Before the last round of system updates that also updated the kernel, the system was running fine. Now it boots to a black screen unless I Pass the nomodeset flag at grub boot. How can i get this resolved so i don't have to keep using nomodeset? my graphics chipset is an ATI Radeon X1300.

You should probably file a bug report to Ubuntu, so this issue can be acted upon. If Ubuntu devs can't fix it, they could forward it upstream (to Linux kernel devs) so it can be resolved in later releases.
