Question: T60 Motherboard Replacement Options

#1 Post by RedPandaDuchy » Mon Sep 16, 2019 10:15 pm

Well I think my motherboard went dead...... i see there is a lack of T60 on ebay that is 15" and is an intel graphics, but I see way way more motherboards than complete laptops online.

The manual is no help being they have all board sizes with 1 FRU, and most of the FRU online does not match any numbers listed in the repair manual (and online they dont list the size either)

Soooo does anyone have a list of 15" boards FRU? (im looking for the Intel graphics boards)

Welcome to the forum!

Boards are interchangeable between 14" and 15" models.

How did you determine that your motherboard was dead ?

With some small chassis modifications you can also put in a T61 14.1" 4:3 non-widescreen motherboard.
It would need a different CPU, fan and PCMCIA unit, but you can now go up to 8GB RAM and with Middleton's BIOS get up to SATA II speed and a few other goodies.

Following the maintenance manual... no beep from motherboard.

Woah the boards are the same size? Really? No differences at all?

Na, sadly no frankenpad for me. Im going the libreboot & linux route over Middleton... being linux dont like nvidia, and libreboot dont like Ati either so im stuck with intel graphics.

The 14.1" and 15.0" thinkpad planars are the exact same, the latter thinkpad utilizes a plug-in card to make up its dimensions. See this regarding the planars and libreboot. With linux and NVIDIA you have a choice of drivers, certainly as far as the T61p NVIDIA FX 570M is concerned, where I prefer the linux driver to the equivalent windows 7 version.

For the "no beep" diagnosis to work you have to remove the RAM.

If you can really "see" the planars on eBay, just follow the HMM and remove yours then compare it to the photos. The ATI chip is clearly visible so you can avoid that and the 15.4" planar has a different shape since it does not utilize an interposer card, which would be visible if attached to a planar pulled from a 15.0" T60.
Also you have to check with the seller that they are photos of the actual item.
