im buying a T61p this week. What is the fastest cpu i can install on that system or are there different variations and if so, what one should I be going for for max performance?

Without other mods: X9000.
Best bang for your buck: T9300.

As an owner of a Dell with the X9000, I can tell you to not get that chip and get the T9300 if you want anything close to a good battery life, minimal heat, if you don't plan to overclock with Throttlestop and if you don't want to sit down and watch for prices of them everywhere for weeks before buying one. But if you want the absolute best performance without modding and a bit of fun to tinker with the unlocked multiplier then go for the X9000. For either processor you might need one of the later revisions of the BIOS version BEFORE you install the CPU to work properly (My Latitude D630 needs the latest A17 BIOS version to support it).

Fastest chip that will work without any mods is the Core 2 Extreme X9000. If youre willing to do some soldering and a BIOS flash, any P-socket 1066 CPU will work, however these are known to be hard on the VRMs (you can go up to a QX9300 like this). At the moment, I have a T601p with an X9000 (because Ive had it sitting around for years, honestly wouldn't go out of my way to buy one with how expensive they are), but honestly the improvements over a T9300 are so small, its not worth it. The multiplier on the T9300 can be unlocked in Throttlestop, and it can be clocked nearly as high. If youre debating between a T9500 and X9000, Id go with the X9000, but if you want something not absurdly expensive, get the T9300, you wont miss much.

is this what I want? 2.80ghz is the fastest?

How can you unlock the multiplier of a CPU that has the multiplier locked? Or are you talking about overclocking the FSB?
Also, the X9000 can be easily overclocked to 3.2Ghz @ 1.2125V (one notch up the factory settings), and if you are insane you can get it to 4Ghz @ 1.4V.

Yep, that's the one. Good thermal paste and TPFC are a must with these.

This highly depends on your system.

I'd not place X9000 in 14" unit. In 15,4" it works perfectly fine and with no overheating issues. Worked on mine ~1,5year, it topped somewhere around high 70s at 2,8GHz undervolted, and mid 80s OCed to 3,4GHz. Take in mind that actually CPU is the bottleneck in 15,4" system, so it does make a difference :)

So to be absolutely certain (as i got mixed answers and am a bit confused ) Only 2.80Ghz is top notch without any other configurations, working strictly off the regular system?

Yes. X9000 is the fastest CPU that one can install in a T61/p without any mods.

Do bear in mind that if you buy a system with an older motherboard you will have to flash Middleton's BIOS first before installing it.

Dont have my T9300 machine anymore, but in Throttlestop there was a lock/unlock button. By default it was set to "lock," but clicking it unlocked it. On my X9000 machine, its the same, except its set to "unlock" by default.

Hmm really? I thought you need to click the unlock button on the X9000 to unlock it, at least that is true on my Dell Latitude D630. Otherwise it won't let you go over the stock multipliers. And what you are implying to me is that T9300 is multiplier unlocked or you somehow managed to unlock the chip? I know for a fact that throttlestop does not overclock the front side bus and can only change the multiplier and voltage.

Im not trying to imply anything, Im just recalling how my chip was working.

I never said anything about changing the clock of the FSB (afaik only way to do that is to solder some stuff, cut a trace, and then flash a BIOS with the chip libraries pulled from the W700)

Hmm did you really remember correctly? I thought it is impossible to unlock a cpu that is locked like the T9300... Unless you meant the QX9300 which is 1066mhz quad core multiplier unlocked and will only work in a T61 after hardware and bios modification.

There is a chance he could have picked up an engineering sample T9300. I picked up an engineering sample Q9100 (normally locked), and it turned out to have unlocked multipliers!

Does middletons bios do something that would unlock a locked CPU? That was the only modification to the machine beyond it being a T601f.

Hardware locked CPU cannot be software unlock.
