is T60 a good gaming laptop?
is T60 a good gaming laptop?
i'm asking this because I tried to put together one few years back.
but no matter what i do(new HS+fan, repasting, copper shim), it would overheat in less than 1 minute and frame rate would drop to single digits - so no games were playable.
for example, NFS Most Wanted plays fine on T43 for hours, while it was unplayable at any screen resolution on T60 I had at that time.
i gave up and moved on to something else.
but now i wonder if the fault was on one particular laptop i had at that time, or T60s in general made a terrible gaming laptop to everyone who tried.
comments appreciated. thanks!

Re: is T60 a good gaming laptop?
T43 had some speedy fans that also get noisy and die easily, but they pushed air. T60 fans run slower maybe as a reaction to complaints about the T43. T60 has poor ventilation as well.
If you can find T500 with Radeon 3650 or W500, after a fresh repasting with quality paste (Arctic Silver 5 or MX4 or Thermal Grizzly) it'll be a competent performer with better cooling than the T60.

Re: is T60 a good gaming laptop?
The reason i'm interested again on T60 is due to its 4:3 ratio screen. T61 is out of the question cuz of the faulty Nvidia chip...TPFanatic wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2020 7:18 pmT43 had some speedy fans that also get noisy and die easily, but they pushed air. Yes, T60 is a good gaming laptop... for games about a decade and a half ago.

Re: is T60 a good gaming laptop?
And NFS: Most Wanted fits that just right
T61 nVidia is not much more faulty than ATI from T60, espiecially X1400 that overheats like crazy. I've seen too many of those systems failing to VRAM problems...
Yours motherboard may be a so-called lemon. I have a cheapy mobo from T60p w/fireGL v5200 if you like.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

Re: is T60 a good gaming laptop?
Yes, my T60 has the X1400 and I'm half-surprised it still works after all these years. I guess I haven't been taxing it too much as a gaming laptop, since for all the time I've had it, there was also a much more powerful gaming desktop around. Now I just use it to play light games or test things specifically on Windows XP, since it's the only system running Windows XP left in the house (unless you count the A31p which is mostly a museum piece).

Re: is T60 a good gaming laptop?
I am actually on a different opinion than most people on this thread. If set up properly, the T60 has extremely good cooling (have a look at the pinned thread "How to make your Ati T60 run cool and quiet"), and I would go as far as saying, IT IS the best laptop for retro gaming due to it's 4:3 aspect ratio screen. Well, actually the best would be a 15 inch, 4:3 Flexview T60, with an Nvidia T61 motherboard in it (a so called "Frankenpad"), as the Nvidia is faster compared to the Ati in the T60, but mainly because Nvidia has better driver support, and there are certain games that are not quite right, or plain don't work on the Ati (I have come across only a couple so far though, still frustrating when it happens).

Re: is T60 a good gaming laptop?
I recently bought a cheap T60 with the 1400x1050 screen and ati x1300 graphics, and i am amazed how this system works, even for windows 10. In fact, i'm typing this on the T60, with only 2GB of RAM and the t2400 1.83 dual core CPU, of course, i don't open too many tabs when browsing, and is not my main machine, and for retro gaming i use winXP on dual boot for better compatibility, but most of the old games that i tried runs fine on win10, All drivers and devices works on both windows, except in win10 the infrared port is showing error 19 and apparently there is no solution yet, but is no deal for me. The system runs hotter on Win10 obviously, but in WinXP is totally cool, even when i didn't made full hardware maintenance on it yet, i'm waiting for MX4 paste to arrive. First inspection was that some idiot bend the heat sink, it had missing screws, it was making noises and the CPU has a white goo as a thermal paste, the thermal pads on the X1300 GPU doesn't look good etiher.
So in my opinion, yes, is a good retro gaming laptop and even a windows 10 for modern light web browsing.
Sorry for any grammar mistakes, Greetings from Colombia.
