Will a new LCD fix my T61?

#1 Post by acz » Wed Jan 22, 2020 10:25 pm

I think my trusty old T61 model 7658-CTO is on a new path. It was working with Win 7, but now is on to Win 10.

After a lot of fiddling, it now has Middleton BIOS, Crucial 500 GB SSD, and I got the external monitor working by reinstalling the old video driver from a decade ago (!). It is running Windows 10.0.18363 and seems pretty snappy.

The next project must be to replace the LCD, which has a pink cast at bootup, but then goes dark within a couple of minutes.
So I am using an external monitor. Am I safe to assume that replacing the LCD will fix this?

I have found the HMM, but I am not so familiar with how to use it.
I can see the LCD diagragm on page 198 of the HMM. I think the part that I need to replace is shown as item 10 "LCD panel"
On page 217, it seems to show 7 different FRUs for LCD panel, "14.1 in WXGA+"
If I understand this, it shows that 3 FRUs were from Samsung, one from CMO, and three from LG. Is that right?

The one marked FRU 42T0406 says 220 nit, which is slightly brighter than the others.
So, is that what I should buy for this T61 model 7658-CTO?

Thanks very much for any advice, there is so much knowledge shared by the folks here.

The best panels came from Samsung (considering stock 16:10 14,1" panels).

I think I should have a complete lid I may be willing to sell (and cheap) but am not really sure what's the exact type (I did not open the lid so far, but may connect it to check that).
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

It doesn't really matter what one you get as long as it's 14.1" widescreen. You could upgrade to WSXGA+ if you wanted too. Also, try connecting to an external monitor so you are sure it's not a problem with the GPU, if you have the Nvidia graphics. If you just have the Intel GMA chip then you don't need to check.

This statement is factually incorrect.

No WSXGA+ upgrade is possible for a 14" widescreen unit since there were no LCDs with the 1680x1050 resolution made in that format.
