Part left after opening a T61

#1 Post by devinfriday » Mon Sep 13, 2021 7:48 am

Hi, i have one part that is left behind after disassembly a T61. I have made the following steps:
  • removed palm rest
    removed keyboard
    removed left speaker
    removed heatsink for cpu upgrade
open the lcd lid to verify the part number of the panel (front+rear bezels, unscrew the lcd frame
replace everything in the reverse order
... and now i have this tiny part and i don't know where it came from. Here's some pics https://photos.app.goo.gl/FkfVLyQ8p8rxLhLu9.
Pleas help me to fix it!

It would help if you stated which T61 you have, presumably it's a widescreen.
Looks like part of the LCD frame.
There are easier ways to check your panel version.

Download the appropriate Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) from the link at the top of the page, and look for the part in there. I woud start at the LCD disassembly section.

A little update: the new cpu won't work. I bought a T9300, already installed Middleton bios on a Merom board and the system won't boot at all. Replaced the old cpu and works like a charm. Also the 8Gb ram works well, now i can't turn back...

If it is thicker/higher than your original CPU, it's definitely "made in China".
Alternatively, it was "faked in China" and/or plainly a dead CPU.

You can just try fitting it around the panel frame and see where the holes align with screws.
For the T9300, trying pressing the ESC key immediately after pressing the power-on button.

The CPU seems very close to the T7200 in my hands, height, pins, only the bottom electrical resistances seems different, but can be a matter of production step. I can post a photo of the T9300 later.

For the cpu, when the T9300 was installed, the laptop will power on but screen stays black and other lights (hdd, wifi, ecc.) where off while only power and battery turns on.
The panel will be changed maybe next month, because while fiddling i have cracked the panel a little, so i ordered a 1440x900 at 37$ shipping included.

It is a test of whether you correctly flashed the Middleton BIOS. Currently you have two unknowns.

Middleton is installed correctly, dmesg reports SATA link at 3.0gbit.
I will ask for a refund if possible.

Notice the "excess glue" on the die. Pins and everything else seems ok.

I have decided to give up and reassemble the lcd lid with the new 1440x900 screen without this part. Everything works fine with 8gb of ram
Now i am waiting for the new battery, then maybe the T9300 if i can find a cheaper one than the 25€~ they ask on ebay.

That left over part looks like the tensioner for the wifi on off switch. It often falls out
when you open it up.

Fitted besides the radio switch, don't know what it does but seems like cinderella's shoe to me ;)
