802.11n Speeds from an 802.11G only Wifi Module?

My Thinkpad T61 Uses an Intel 4965 Wifi module and, I am a bit confused on what it is capable of. In the OS it shows up as "Intel PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection", and on the chip itself the model is "4965AG". This suggests that it is only capable of going up to 802.11g at 2.4Ghz / 54mbps, and this used to be true, but about a week ago for seemingly no reason, it's started working on 802.11n at 5Ghz / 450mpbs. Is there any explanation as to what's going on? Was there a firmware update that happened that I was unaware of? I ran a speedtest to make sure it was actually running at that speed, and it is. There is also no indication anywhere on the module itself that it supports the 802.11n standard.

Back then there was a big fuss as contemporary Macs came with wireless cards that had draft-N support disabled (which makes some sense, as the standard wasn't set yet so some dealbreaker could happen) and, once that wasn't found to be a problem, they dared sell it as a paid extra (I have this bookmark from back then:
https://notes.kateva.org/2007/01/sarban ... es-in.html ), maybe it's the same case - except for how it got enabled?
This:
http://en.techinfodepot.shoutwiki.com/w ... nk_4965AGN also shows in the first example a 4965AG (which I've never heard of before) working as an AGN...

Are you saying that the 4965AG is n capable? What driver do you need to achieve this?

I'm using Chrome OS Flex right now, which is a version of Chrome OS meant to run on "normal" computers. It's linux based, so I guess it's using whatever driver is built in to the kernel. As for Windows, I don't know which driver to use.

I just compared the iwl4965 firmware blobs on Debian Stretch and Bullseye, and they're identical. Either it's a change in the kernel driver, or another component of the Linux WiFi subsystem.
