Which T61p cooler for T60 15"?

I found a 42w2460 on eBay but I don't know if it'll fit or not. I can't find much about this stuff online. Is a 42w2460 good for the T60 15" or do I need some different model t61p cooler? There's different models such as 44C0557 or 44C0558 and they look different too, I don't know which one will fit properly.

When I tried installing each a t61p nvidia and t500 ati heatsink into a t60 ati, I couldn’t make them fit.

Best i can suggest is get a good thermal pad for the gpu if applicable, for the northbridge, and either a good pad or good paste for the cpu. If the fan is going out replace it. But stick with t60 heatsink.

The w500 heatsink seems to fit fine in the picture though https://web.archive.org/web/20190301163 ... 79_jpg.htm

I see the photo. The GPU part of the heatsink is not sitting flush on the GPU and the northbridge looks overly padded to compensate for the airgap. If you try it in reality as I have, I believe you would abandon all hope and go back to correct T60 heatsink. What I have done to get best of both worlds is remove a T500 fan from T500 heatsink and tape it in place of T60 fan in T60 heatsink. I sold such a David to a forum member and they haven't complained about it yet.

GPU is not worth fooling around with because if it goes, the T60 is done.

Discrete GPU T61 non-widescreen coolers fit OK, you just need to remove the thermal pad from the topside of the cooler and then dremel off part of the curved down edge on the underside of the T60 steel retention bracket - otherwise it will bulge over the GPU.

W500 coolers are also viable, the issue I had with one of them was vertical metal fins around the fan which made it a tiny bit too tall, it wasn't hard to bend the fins flat.

IIRC, both of those options provide one extra heat pipe compared to the T60 stock cooler. The fans are all basically the same.

I finally tried this out. I got the cooler from a widescreen 15" T61 with three heat pipes, cut off the copper fins the cables are routed through, and used a dremel to remove part of the plate from the T60 cooler, but it still doesn't properly fit. There's a slight keyboard bulge on the part that used to have the thermal pad and it makes me pretty uncomfortable with it. It does seem cooler though, and I like being able to use thermal paste instead of thermal pads for the GPU. It also fits without the T60's plate at all, using only the T61's top plate, but there's no pressure at the bottom of the cooler at all and there seems to be a gap between the cooler and the chip there, and temps seem much higher, so it's probably not getting a good contact on the GPU. I might just give up and use the T60's cooler, but it really is insanely loud. I just don't like that keyboard bulge there.

That is consistent with the problem i described, being that it physically doesn’t fit.

The lower chip is the northbridge containing the memory controller among other essential chipset functions. It needs to stay cool or the laptop will safety shutdown.

You can try modifying things further or just get a replacement T60 fan or replacement T60 cooler or put the T61 fan in the T60 cooler.

The NON-widescreen T61 heatsinks fit a T60 fine. Widescreen T61's are another beast altogether, and I am not at all surprised that they don't fit.

I have never done anything with widescreen T60's so IDK if they are compatible with the 15" wide T61s.

Widescreen t60 is like a prototype 15.4” t61.

I put widescreen t60 heatsink in normal T60. Worked fine. Only had to trim off the antenna guides.
