I'm not sure if this is new news, but I hadn't seen this before
Lenovo announces new T60 and X60 machines at CES

Lenovo has just announced their new T60 and X60 Yonah lines that include Dual Core processors in the high end, along with options for Verizon EV-DO in both lines. We couldn't glean any info as to whether these will support HSDPA as well, but what we do know is that the compact X60 'books score you an XGA 12.1-inch screen, 7.5 hours of battery life, and weigh 2.7 pounds, while the T60 line (pictured) sports 15.1-inch displays, but still keeps things light and skinny at 4.5 pounds and 1-inch thick. All the laptops are privy to PCI-Express graphics, with the T60p running the 256MB ATI FireGL card, and the T60 line can support serial ATA drives and up to 4GBs of RAM.

To be honest, I don't like the fact they changed the volume/power buttons to silver, and added the multimedia icons on the arrow keys. These 2 things definately show which direction Lenovo is taking with the T-Series.

Also, USB on the right side.I like this.

Ok, after what I'm seeing of this machine, why am I reminded of a thin R series had some cheap (read: shoddy quality) hardware thrown in it? Lopping off the 2nd pcmcia port on the Z series is one thing, but making the T series look like a thin R series is not the direction really meant for a model that built its reputation on quality.

Anyone can put titanium on the cover of a laptop. Anyone can make a laptop with a 1600x1200 LCD. Anyone can offer a $500 knockoff. IBM however, would not do such a thing, knowing full well of their reputation of making high quality hardware.

If this is the direction that they want to head, I hope IBM has a "Plan B" for another series of their own, since the the T series stood for quality. Lenovo removing it on the T60/T60p is definitely showing that quality will always be a foreign concept to them.

I wouldn't be too quick to judge if I haven't tried it out yet; I would like to actually go and try one of them out.

Am I mistaken, or did they change the voltage to 20V, as suggested by this pic:

Yeah - its the same adapters used on the Z series machines.

I have already discussed about the 2nd PCMCIA slot, of which the Z series was not the first machine not to have two slots so i'm not quite sure why you are still going on about that.

Please get off the whole IBM/Lenovo thing too as this has no relivance other than in your imagination. T60 will be of the same quality as T40, there is no logical reason to think otherwise.

Too bad that it seems, that they have not took hands on the displays. I would rather like to see a display with LED driven background light.

The thinkpads displays really lack brightness to allow working outside.

Alternatively, an optional transreflective TF (like all the Pocket PCs) would be a nice option.

My 2 cents.

I must say that I'm jealous of the third vertical USB port

(have a t43)
The article also says that the fingerprint reader can be used to authenticate on webpages. AFAIK my t43 is not capable of doing this, so is that a software update for it? I would love to be able to use such a feature.

i think the thinkvintage button looks cheap. isnt the t60 thicker than the t40 ??? would be horrible...

There can be no denying in the fact that the addition of the windows key, will definitely alter the keyboard feel.

The part that strikes me about it looking too much like the mainstream R series is the outer casing and the buttons remind me of the R series. It's that the model in the reviews look to be like something that got a major budget cut in design.

I just want to be sure that dropping $2800 after tax on a T60p will be a not-so-worthless venture, since they seem to be the only ones in town who do get things right.

Admittedly, I am a bit of a hard to please customer - but when they get something right(lots documentation, enough parts to build your own machine many times over, something that outlasts the warranty by leaps and bounds), it's something you'll be able to hear about from the next hill over. You can have all the great features in the world, but high quality and service will beat price hands down.

I think it will be a good evolutionary step from the T43. Don't like the extra Windows keys, but it's something I can live with. Anandtech still likes the keyboard a lot, which is a good thing.
I'd love to see a comparison table with the T42, T43 and T60, comparing size, weight, processor, memory, bus, GPU, monitor, harddrive, CPU, WLAN etc. to give a better impression of the changes that's made a T43 a T60.

The two cores sound like a great thing. It's more power efficient having a dual-core operating at half frequency, than a single core at double. Eg. compare the power consumption of the 0.7v Dothan at 600 MHz to a 1.7 at 1.05. Six times the power, three times the performance.

I missed the more technical side of the preview.

Actually, I kinda feel that the silver tabs and buttons are a weird change, but so is the Windows button...

At least Lenovo actually experimenting with their new products. And I'm happy that they're doing so, since they can always revert any new, unpopular changes.

The odd part was that I stumbled upon this announcement indirectly from AnandTech's Yonah review article, link posted above.

I was surprised at the silver latch, honestly. Made me...whoa. No silver on my TPs, please. Given the design was minimalistic black, I don't see the point in making it chromy or whatever you'd like to call it.

Strikes me as trying to say, put chrome fenders on an Astin Martin - silly for the intended elegance.

Having played with a few Z60s, I think they made a reasonable decision to remove a PC Card slot,and add an USB. Of course ... if you only get one ... is it PC Card, or ExpressCard? I'm glad I have a T43.

And the new Lenovo keyboard, with Windows keys that some of us never wanted.... I'm glad I have a T43.

BTW, you can use the fingerprint reader and CSS on web pages. I do it all the time.

P.S. From that label on the cover -- i've seen 'em -- that looks like a pre-production review/BVT model. Just a hunch.

Hrm. The only T60 I saw on Lenovo's (public) site is 195144U, which has 1 Type I/II and 1 ExpressCard slot. But NO S-video.

Now really, how many of you use S-video?

Good point. And watching a DVD on, say, a hotel TV. Forgot about that.

Of course ... I'm the guy who shelled out for a Dock II to put a FireWire input card in, and use DVI-D out to my HDTV, for film editing. It's only a wee bit better than the S-video, and I didn't realize that an ExpressCard FireWire card would've been far more useful. Oh well.

The lack of S-Video is disapointing. Not to mention the front buttons. I didn't get a good enough look to check, but I can safely bet I'd hit the Wi-Fi button off at inopportune times at least three times throughout the course of a day. What I do like (and this is being picky to the point of being anal,) is the fact it has a light apparently for the AC adapter power. I have a habit of forgetting to turn back on the surge bar before I turn on the notebook now and then. Would be nice to have seen that on the T43, but the T43 is too solid a notebook to give up now. 9 hours sounds exciting, but some how I doubt that will happen. Maybe 9 hours, idling.

I've get around 5-6 hours on the T43 9-Cell, and can only wonder what I can do with the UltraBay Slim battery.

The prospect of 256 megs of vidram is promising, but I think my T43 can get me along in the interim.

I also miss, as do many here, the red trackpoint buttons. It does in fact look more bland.

On the Z60s, the Wifi thingie is a left-right switch.

I get about another 1.5 to 2 hours on my Ultraslim battery, 1/2 what my 6-cell does. If you have a 9-cell, I doubt it would really wow you. Maybe give you another 30% run time compared to your 9-cell.

An hour or two can be a nice boost. When I take this thing off to college, along with a fresh 9-cell I'll probably purchase a slim battery. Left-Right switches are definately better than a push-in, but I still have a tendency to hit even those in.

Nothing is bad about the R Series at all; I have friends that use them and love the heck out of them. Interestingly enough, the R52 got the Best Buy Award: All Pupose Notebook while the T43 got the Best Buy Award:
Desktop replacement ThinkPad T43...Neat, huh?

They are all Thinkpads - I've gotten very good service from my R series Thinkpad over the last 2 years. I'd have no qualms about buying another R series unit - I would take my R40 over my work issued Dell Latitude D800 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I'm suprised those to Editor's awards weren't reversed though...

Don't really understand all these design decisions... T43 is near perfect notebook as it is. For external - remove lpt port or replace it with dvi(com port for me), put flexview on 14.1 sxga and more recent ati card. improve battery.

S-video is really big loss for me, since outside of work notebook is about only media/entertainment thing.

Having used thinkpads for about 6 years i don't really like where lenovo leans with such changes. :/ hope it's all transitional/testing new ideas thing...
