Im thinking about buying a T60 right now. However, I fear that the T60s will come with cool new features in the near future (right after I buy, of course). Does anyone know if there is any rumors of new stuff being added to the T60 soon? Any information would help

Merom-based Core Duo (brand new core, 64-bit) will debut sometime in September or October of this year, but this will only really affect you if you need all the computational power you can get.

For most users, a T60 will be fine for a long time to come. Three years after buying my T40 it still does everything I want it to do

I beleive that by the time Wista is released, the transittion into 64 bit technology will run very fast. Since 64 bit support is as good as mandatory ón new desktop computers, and with the introduction of merom the laptop business will be as well (since AMD already has 64 bit mobile support), 32bit plattforms will face as quick death as AGP did. Of corse new software wil be reased in both 32bit and 64 bit versions for some time, just as 16bit vs 32bit once did, but it will definitely be a major generation switch. Last time that happened was like 10 years ago.

it might still be WORKING in your computer, yes, but few of graphic card vendors offer the latest chips with AGP bus format.

The move to x64 is going to be slow and painful for corporate users. Last year almost half of all corporate machines were running Windows 2000, and my own office just switched over to XP less than six months ago.

Since the guy was asking about ”cool new features in the near future”, I assume he is planning on administer his machine on his own. In that case, 64 bit and the technology that comes with that probably is a huge interest to him and he wont wait until 2012 to upgrade to Vista just because some companies have slow working IT organisations.

Even the latest 7xxx series and X1xxx series by ATI have some AGP versions. And that's two years and two lines of cards after PCI-Express was introduced.

Unless you can get more than 4GB of RAM on a laptop, I don't see the point of 64-bit. Even now, it's difficult to get more than 4GB on a desktop. Nothing states that 64-bit will be faster, except that newer memory might be 64-bit and new OS's might be tweaked to run on 64-bit, only. Very few needs require >4GB, except for Photoshop, high-end mathematics, and overloaded servers. As far as 64-bit OS, Linux seems ahead of the pack, and is great for anyone that wants to experiment.

Anyways, I'm sure 32-bit will be around for a long time. My prediction - at least another 5 years.

The thing to keep in mind is that with the T60 launching now and Merom so close around the corner, you won't see T60's disappearing when Merom comes out. I'd be shocked if Lenovo launched a whole new line of Merom-based Thinkpads, really probably only a couple of models for the first few months. I wouldn't expect to see widespread Merom machines until towards the end of the year.

If you have to buy now, a T60 will be a great machine for now & quite a while. If you can wait, I'd wait for Merom personally. 64-bit, VT, 4MB L2 Cache, better performance, etc.

I've been waiting a long time to buy a new thinkpad, and my view is that the next few months looks like a good time to buy. New processors on the T60's at prices that aren't too bad (though waiting for some solid reviews might be a good idea), and there should be some good deals on older T42's and T43's as they try to rotate some stock out during this time (though most of the older models will remain priced quite high, as discussed in other threads).

Unless you REALLY have a need for 64-bit processing or for Windows Vista, which most people probably don't, you shouldn't wait for them. There is always something newer coming out, and if you wait, you're gonna wait forever. I'm using the release of the T60 to an impetus to stop sitting around, prowling on this forum, and actually get a new computer in my hands to replace my aging T23. Software companies aren't stupid, and are going to realize that most people don't upgrade their computers that often, so 32-bit compatible apps are going to be around for quite a while, as K.Eng said. The fact that people are still posting in the "legacy" Thinkpads subforum should attest to this. Unfortunately, I fall into the category of liking the newest things, but not having the money for it.
