Should I wait to buy a T60?

I am planning on picking up the T60 2623-D7U. Some of you might be interested in this model as it's 14.1" w/128MB dedicated graphics card, it's not one offered on the webpage, but if you call they can get it for you (specs from the support page below). Anyway, back on subject, is it a good idea to wait (and for how long if so) after the initial availability of the T60 to order, because it's a new model and they may still have some kinks to work out? I guess those of you that purchased the first of a series (T40/T30/T20/etc.) right when they came out may have better experience in this area. Thanks!

But anyway, this is my new laptop for sure!! It's only a question of when to order.

I purchased my T40 in April 2003, about a month after the release of the original Centrino platform.

I wish I had waited 2-3 months, as there were several issues with the machine, including an AC Adapter that made weird buzzing noises, loose battery, and flexing on the right hand side of the keyboard.

Now I managed to fix most of the outstanding issues (all but the fan noise are no longer problems, and even the fan noise can now be controlled with ThinkPad fancontrol software), but I had to expend considerable effort and backyard engineering skills to get everything working.

I am planning on getting either a T60 or Z60t series machine, but I am going to wait for comprehensive reviews on the Centrino Duo platform as well as reports from users in the field. I'm also going to make a trip to Office Depot to see the T60 in person.

Now I've just got to keep my fingers crossed that my highly modified T40 doesn't go kaput after the warranty runs out!

I think it is a wise decision to wait for some user experience, especially for the fan noise. I had a T43 in hand shortly and it made a hell of a noise compared to my T40p (and definetly I wouldn't buy such a noisy Thinkpad). But the buzzing AC Adapter noises, loose battery and flexing on the right hand side of the keyboard had nothing to do with your early built model. All this stuff showed up later on as well. Most surprisingly even the accelerating fan noise is still there in some new T43.

The fan noise and slight buzzing from the AC adapter are present on all Thinkpads, to varying degrees; I would wait a little while as well, another good reason to wait is the Merom based T6Xs down the line.

Let me repeat what I have said before: my nth generatation T43 CTO makes less noise and generates less heat compared to my 1st generation T42 with FPR ..... I am defintiely against buyin the 1st revision of products. By the time, the T60 goes through 1-2 revisions, I will being to consider upgrading.

Relax. They didn't say your T43 is noiser than all T42s out there. No need to take it personally lol

Hmm... the flexing on the righthand side of the keyboard was fixed when I tried out both 14" and 15" T42 models.

Even if those problems did exist later on, someone had already found partial fixes or solutions. I just don't want to be the one doing a whole bunch of tweaks and experiments this time!

That was merely a statement as I took it, not something that was taken personally.

My T43 has been consistently quiet and cool from the beginning when I got it, much like my friend's T40; and I got the T43 just a little after it came out.

too late...just ordered one...2007-63U

I couldn't wait anymore! Kind of ironic considering it won't get to me for 2-3 months. The order site says 3/18/06, but that's a definite "yeah, right" based on the 2-3 month estimate I got from Lenovo telephone ordering. If it sucks, I'll just return it. But I think I'll just probably end up liking it a lot.
