I am so glad I cancelled my order for a T43p two months back. If any comparisons have been made, does anyone know if the 128MB X1400 GPU in the T60 is better than the 128MB ATI FireGL V3200? And is the GPU in the T60p that much better??

The FireGL blows the X1400 out of the water, but in different terms. It is a professional CAD card, not gaming one.

For gaming performance, X1400 should be a notch better than the V3200, but not as good as the V5200.

i have the 3200 256MB and I can't run Call of Duty

I can play FarCry, and MS Flight Sim, but no on the Call of Duty....

The fireGL v3200 does not blow the x1400 out of the water. Actually the x1400 should return better performance in almost everything but intensive openGL apps.

The FireGL v5200 however should beat the x1400 in almost everything.

The x1400 should play most all new games, but probably not at highest settings.

The FireGL V3200 is good for one thing: unified drivers. Unified drivers are supposed to be an industry safeguard to REALLY make sure designers don't see missing pieces on their CAD designs (why this is not handled well enough by OpenGL and Direct3D outright I do not know). I have SolidWorks which takes advantage of that function, and really, it isn't that impressive.

Just for the record, for any student user, SolidWorks works just fine on Intel integrated graphics on the P4 desktops at school: on Intel IG there is just ONE visualization option missing, and it isn't that useful to work in it either.

This really does not mean much when it comes to gaming. I don't know about the X1400, but I know the X1600 is an entirely new generation of GPU and should be vastly superior the the FireGL V3200.

I think I read in another thread that the v5200 in the T60p is actually an X1600 chip...is that what you mean here, redchair? Man I hope that's true...

The v5200 isn't listed on ATI's website!

There's a graphic chip comparator here: http://www.rage3d.de/grafikkartendb.php?id=72 It's in german, but it's easy, just select another graphic card from the dropdown list an click ok.
As you can see, the mobile and desktop version of the X1300/X1400 all use the RV515 Chip.
The X1400 is clocked the same as the desktop X1300 (not Pro) @ 450Mhz, while the X1300 is the exactly same chip @ 390Mhz. The desktop Pro version is running @ 600Mhz.
When I get my T60 i will try to overclock the X1300 to X1400 specs, theoretically they should have equal performance, as long as the ram size isn't the bottleneck.

Edit: I was also thinking about buying the T60 with X1400, but the model containing the X1400 is about 400-500€ more around here (It has of course also a larger harddisk, more ram etc...). I'd rather invest this money into my desktop PC, i get more bang for the buck. On the other hand, I don't need the graphics power for anything other than a little gaming every now and then.

Strangely, one would think that the FireGL cards that are optimized for OpenGL should actually like those games more...

Anyhow, you should be able to install Radeon or Omega drivers on the FireGL and make it behave just like the Radeon it's based on.

Let me see if I can clear a couple things up:

MR 9600/9700: 4 pixel pipelines, 9700 clocked higher
MFGL V3200: 4 pixel pipelines, more VRAM, clocked near 9600 levels I believe

MR X1300/X1400: 4 pixel pipelines, X1400 clocked higher, otherwise the same (some mfr's can implement 64-bit bus if they choose...)

MR X1600: 12 pixel pipelines, I believe 12 shader units, 90nm

MFGL V5200: Should be same hardware config as MR X1600, more VRAM I believe, drivers not game optimized of course

If you want the best gaming possible in a Thinkpad, get the V5200 and load some modded drivers for gaming. The X1400 isn't bad for a portable machine, but its not good. Here's a sneak preview on some scores:

My machine is almost identical except I have 2GB of RAM and the Omega drivers installed. 3dMark 2005 was just shy of 2300.

what is the best app to control overclocking for the ati gpu? I have read about powerstrip but anything else? Also, has anyone tried overclocking the x1400 yet? If so, what are the highest stable setting you have been able to achieve and did you see a big performance increase in gaming?
