If you're lucky enough to not be at a college that forces McAffee on you, use the Norton. That's what Army civil service uses.
I wont use norton.. I had it on a machine, and switched and avast which i switched to found stuff norton had missed. I'm a diehard avast fan, but ive got some trend stuff from work i can use.. but norton/symantec isnt even an option.

I have Norton on my wife's desktop and McAfee on my desktop. I looked at a lot of reports and there are a few better ones out there (according to their tests, but not by much) and I figured if Lenovo was preinstalling a Symantec product, their machines probably work well with it...and it does. I know they probably paid Lenovo for that right, but with all the problems people seem to have with updates and bios, etc. it couldn't hurt to keep their product on. It is also designed for a "business" environment" and I figured they wouldn't put up with any crap! It has run great from day one and the yearly fee ($70) is in-line with most everyone else. Let us know what you decide.

I've just lost faith in their product, and with selling this stuff every day, there are similar/better products in my opinion for the money. Trend and Computer Associates both make absolutely wonderful products, and again, I use AVAST on my 3 machines at home, and have used it on many others, and all my family and NEVER have any trouble. Alot is personal preference, but when you have one product on a machine, install a new one, and use it to check and it finds stuff the other - regularaly updated product- didnt catch, and it actually forces you to have to reformat and reinstall, it causes you to lose alot of faith in said product. i scan 2x a week, and the symantec/norton product never found a hint of anything.. coulda been a freak incident, who knows.. but i wont use their stuff.. even for free.. I've got some trend here i think ill give a try.

I'm brand new to this board, which I discovered while looking for information about the Thinkpad T60. I just put in the order for mine, a model 2623D6U. No idea when they'll get it to me - I'm in Canada so I didn't even get the option of buying it on sale (the US version has a sale price of $1449 currently.)

I was disappointed that Lenovo Canada does not warn you anywhere on its site that orders take 3 to 4 weeks or more to process - only after you've hit the button do you find that out.

However, response to e-mails/calls regarding the order has been good - in fact, I originally ordered a 2623DAU, and then changed my mind - a phone call to Lenovo got the order changed without any fuss. Unfortunately my reason for changing my mind - the US sale price - was due to my believing it applied to me, I missed the US only part in the small print. But I think the SXGA+ screen and the DVD-recorder are worth the extra $$ - at least, I hope so. I've also ordered the docking station and a carrying case, and I'll probably get more RAM later on after I've got the thing.

I'll post here again when the unit's delivered... hopefully before Christmas!
Cheers!
Ian

I just called Lenovo to ensure that my order was going ahead, and they said it should go out the first week of December. It will be such a huge step up from the T23 it is replacing!

why does my order take a long time?

Some parts may be out of stock. When did your sales rep say it would be shipped (or did you order online)?

how accurate are the estimated ship dates? is it like Dell where they say 3 weeks, but they actually ship it in 1 week?

Well, they all ship out of Hong Kong, though I'm not so sure that's what it means in your order. I'm pretty sure in your case it's that you got a customized version of the 2613-HKU model. The sales rep tends to be more accurate. What you might do is firing him off a quick e-mail (not sounding like youre angry at him, just say you're wondering if you should expect to have it in 3 weeks or for it to not even ship until 4 weeks from now).

It can take 4gb, but they only list 3 because WinXP can only use 3gb. If you feel the need to a 4th gigabyte of ram you'll have to wait until Vista to actually use that 4th gigabyte.
Ordered Thinkpad T60 (1953-EUU) on Fri 11/3. Shipping date is 11/29. With Lenovo's sale on memory, I ordered 2GB of it for my machine which is the one item in my order just before submitting it online said it would it take 3-4 weeks. All other customizations were noted as 8-10 days. With a five year old 256MB memory laptop (not Thinkpad), looking forward to a faster machine. As not in very urgent need of a replacement machine, I'll be happy if it shows up sometime during the holidays.
Received email notification that my Thinkpad shipped yesterday (11/23/2006) from HK which is six days earlier than their estimate. Hopefully it will arrive next week! The minidock which ordered at the same time was shipped 11/18 from NC, USA and arrived 11/21.

recently ordered T60

#705 Post by geebertos » Fri Nov 24, 2006 2:21 pm

Hi everyone - this is my first posting in this forum.

I purchase a t60 on 11/16/06 (just after the holiday sale began) and my estimated ship date is 12/19/06. I was told there is shortage of RAM, hence the delay. I ordered it with 1.5 gig, and I suggested that they ship it with 512 and send the other 1 gig later, but they said they are short on 512 too. So we'll see...it's going to be a very long wait because I have been shopping for a notebook for over 6 months before I settled on the t60.

Another note - I purchased it through a sales rep on the phone, so I did not get the free shipping (online only, -$50). I also paid tax, which I wasn't anticipating, and I was wondering if I could have averted tax if I purchased it online. I live in Arizona. Through the sales rep I was able to get a deal on 1 year accidental damage as well as an extra AC cord. All in all, with the holiday discounts its a super deal.

Nope, online you'd pay taxes too. You have to pay taxes anywhere that a business has operations, which sadly means for dell and lenovo/ibm you pretty much pay tax in every state (well...most states).

I placed an order for a T60p through the DoD store today. Specs are:

Core 2 Duo 7600 (2.33 GHz)
14.1" SXGA+
1 GB RAM
100 GB 7200 RPM HDD
DVD Double Layer Burner
Intel Wireless 802.11 abg
9 Cell Battery
Advanced Mini Dock

Indicated ship date is 12/28. Not a problem...I'll just keep using my T43 until then.

On the OS front, it's not Vista vs XP, but 64-bit vs 32-bit. 64-bit XP can address more than 4 GB, but 32-bit Vista cannot.

That said, current ThinkPads are pretty much out of luck on this anyway, regardless of the OS choice, thanks to the Intel Centrino chipset limitations. As per tabook:
31. Maximum memory capacity may require the replacement of standard component with largest supported component available. On the ThinkPad systems with an Intel 945GM or 945PM chipset, even though it is possible to physically install 4GB of memory, the actual amount of memory addressable by an Operating System will be limited to 3GB.

Hey guys. Long time reader, but I haven't posted before. I ordered my T60 on November 18th, and it says the ship date is December 22nd. I hope it ships before then, I don't want to wait so long. Here are the specs:

Configured 2613HK System:
LENOVO THINKPAD T60 2613 - CORE 2 DUO T7200 2 GHZ - 14.1" TFT
40Y6798 LENOVO THINKPAD NOTEBOOK BATTERY - LI-ION - 2600 MAH
41N8355 LENOVO THINKPAD HARD DRIVE - 100 GB - SATA-150
41C9334 LENOVO THINKPAD PROTECTION EXTENDED SERVICE AGREEMENT - 3 YEARS
40Y8496 MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL - LICENSE
40Y7738 LENOVO THINKPAD MEMORY - 1 GB - SO DIMM 200-PIN - DDR II
41N8358 CTO 8X MAX DUAL LAYER DVD RECORDABLE ULTRABAY SLIM DRIVE
41U4780 CTO THINKPAD 11A/B/G/N WIFI WIRELESS LAN MINI-PCIE

It doesn't say it up there, but it has 2gigs of ram, the 100gig harddrive is 7200rpm, the battery is the 9-cell, and the x1400 ATI graphics card.

I'm so excited about getting the laptop. I currently have a 600x, but it is so sloooooooow. This one should be much, much faster.

Hi Mtomd: Other than the ThinkPad wireless card and the 7200 rpm (I got 5400) HD, our systems are identical. I think you will be VERY happy with it. This is my first laptop and I looked long and hard at other brands before deciding on the T60; but after receiving it I am so glad that I did. SOLID is the word that best describes the laptop. It is very elegant in black and doesn't show the fingerprints. Runs quiet and barely warm and FAST. Make sure you do call or email a rep and ask them to speed it along...be nice but forceful; it really does make a difference in the delivery time. He bumped me up to EXPRESS 2 day from Hong Knog at no charge to me, besides getting the ship date moved up. GOOD LUCK!

After waiting for almost a month on a z61m, I canceled that order and ordered the T60 widescreen yesterday (87445BU). This morning I checked the status and it showed shipped 11/30/2006! Is it maybe because I didn't customize on this order? Anyway, pleasantly surprised.

This is my second laptop. I traded a one year old first generation pentium Packard Bell desktop years ago for a 386 Compaq Contura 430c Laptop. It was a stepdown in performance but I reallyliked the idea of portability. This will however be my first thinkpad and I cant wait. Of course with that being said :x  shipment has been delayed due to: "A FLIGHT DELAY OCCURRED BECAUSE OF MECHANICAL REASONS". WTF It figures tech quality outta Asia is usually good but manufactoring of planes comes utta the US and France.

I ordered my new T60 on November 14, and they have just processed the charge on my credit card on the 28th... I believe that means the order's filled and its on its way.... I hope so!!

I ordered the same date 11/14 and I still don't show any changes, it says: "In progress, estimated ship date 12/08/2006"

ARGH... I think it was that 1.5GB RAM upgrade....
