While we're twiddling our thumbs waiting for our T60s, I thought it might be interesting to note what we've ordered (if you have), when we ordered and when Lenevo predicts it will ship.

I ordered a T60p (2007C8U) with an additional GB of RAM (40Y7738) on 02/28/06 which is supposed to ship on 04/10/06. I plan to install GNU/Linux on it and use it mostly for coding up numerical methods (before moving things over to real clusters for real computation) and visualizing results.

EDIT: I just ordered myself another 6-cell battery (40Y6799) to replace the default 9-cell for daily lugging around. I wasn't aware of the protruding nature of the 9-cell battery earlier and I am not too keen on it. Not after I've already gotten attached to a very snug bag!

I ordered on 2/26-2623DDU. Did not change a thing. I will upgrade afterwords. ETA is 4/03/06. Our fellow members on the X60 board seem to be getting them in much earlier than their ETAs. Maybe we will be as lucky.

Order below made on 2/24 and left default also to expedite (hopefully). I'll add another gig stick once I actually get it.

I'll be using mine as a portable application server, firewall/IDS/IPS killer and streaming video platform for IPTV (SBC/Alcatel Lightspeed Labs) testing.

Hi everyone. First post and new member.

Here's my story of how I came to arrive at a T60p as my new machine.

I'm an Apple fan, but am very, very comfortable with Windows. I have zero issues with XP, and frankly I think with SP2 installed Windows XP has matured into a fairly good OS. I have sold a dual G5 2.7 Ghz very recently, as I wanted a strong desktop replacement machine. The G5 was a hell of a nice computer, but a bit overkill for my needs, and I really want portability via a desktop replacement notebook (but I'm not willing to lug around a 17" monster).

Given that I wanted a very strong notebook to replace my dual G5, I narrowed my choices down to two: a MacBook Pro or ThinkPad T60p. I went to an Apple store and played with a MBP, and quite honestly, it's one hell of a machine. It ran warm but not too warm, it was fast, and the LCD was amazing. I was impressed.

At the same time, given that whatever machine I settled on would see heavy use, I wanted something durable and that's engineered to be used heavily in real-world situations. IMHO, the only Windows notebooks worth a [censored] are ThinkPads, because their engineering is top-grade. So, to contrast against the MBP, I started looking at the T60p (2007-94U), which, according to the rep, is the highest-configured T60p you can buy.

Long story short, I ordered the T60p today. The rep quoted me a 3-8 week backorder, which, on the 8-week side, is very long -- too long, probably. I'm still somewhat torn between the MBP and the T60p, but overall I think the T60p is a better choice, simply because that it, being a primary machine for everything, is better suited for daily use and the rigors of being portable.

Plus, when Vista is released, I'll have a machine that can easily handle the highest graphical settings.

So, I wait like many of you. With any luck, we start to get our machines sooner rather than later.

i was gonna, but then my dad said he wanted to buy one for me... so im waiting till may/june when he'll be able to do that. he wants to order two, one for me and one for him as a celebration of his conquering debt then theyre gonna throw me some cash for my T40, and its going to my sister for college.

ill probably be getting a C-D 1.83 or 2ghz, mr x1400, 1gb, 80/100gb 7200, Multiburner, and, of course, a 14.1" SXGA+.

I am so on the fence about this. There are things I really like about both the T60p and the MacBook Pro. The advantages (for me) of the T60p are the Ultra Bay, I love the idea of getting about 8 hours or so of battery uptime with the 9 volt plus ultra bay battery, the easy upgradeability of the hard drive etc, and there's the general robustness of the T series. The pluses of the MacBook Pro are the display, the wonderful backlit keyboard, the looks and slightly the OS but I'm fine with either. I really consider the keyboard a wash, they are both great. It seems the T60p attracts the more practical side of me where the MacBook Pro attracts the more asthetic side. I have to decide by Monday.

I ordered a 2007-62U on 2/16/06, with a ship date of 3/23/06 on the web site (though my sales rep told me 6 to 8 weeks and said the web site is overly optimistic--based on his past experience with new product releases). I didn't order any extras, but am contemplating adding an extra 6 cell battery to my order and the UltraBay hard drive adapter. I also want to upgrade to 3Gb Ram and plan to get a 2Gb sodimm from a third party source.

I will use the computer for Adobe Creative Suite stuff, mostly Photoshop functions and page layout in InDesign. I tend to be doing a lot of internet research at the same time and am usually heavily multi-tasking (word documents open, image viewer, dictionaries, firefox). So I want all these things to run well at once, with Photoshop and InDesign going too.

I also want to install OS X on it for fun and just in case all the creative people I deal with get uppity about Mac compatibility--if all else fails I do have a PowerMac G4 at home. And I'm still wondering if I really want to get into XP. Currently I'm running 2K. All the proprietary licensing stuff in XP seems like a pain.

I ordered a 19514BM upgraded to 1GB of RAM and also with a 9 cell battery. 3809AUD. A bit dear but money is not really an issue when I am purchasing a solid and reliable product from a highly reputable retailer.

It will be used in my studies at university - word processing, statistical/economtric software and maybe some basic CAD (Solidworks). I don't know if the ThinkPad can hack the latter but it's not an issue if it can't.

Apparently they don't hit the shores of Australia until mid/late March. They said I will be able to pick up mine on the 21st of March.

I'm right where you are. I already have a12" PowerBook at home, so I know how good Apple laptops are and I'm familiar with OSX. That said, ThinkPads ARE built considerably better, and there are technical aspects that trump the MBP (higher screen resolution, better max RAM, etc.).

I love the Apple machines, but I have a feeling that what the MBP is an interim product, something that's really not meant to be the next-gen PowerBook. We shall see.

In the meantime, by every measure I can tell, the T60p is the Windows notebook to beat.

Just learned that the T60p does not have a DVI port, so unfortunately and sadly I will be cancelling my order and going wiith a MacBook.

I'm bummed. I don't see any reason why a $3K+ notebook -- especially one that's considered a workstation-class machine -- would not have a digital video interface port. People who want a FireGL V5200 GPU aren't only using projectors and dusty old CRTs.

Oh well. In any event, these forums are great. I've learned a lot very quickly.

Sorry to see you leave, but like the person who responded to your query said, there is dvi on the dock; which you will probably have set up if you plan on using the sweet FireGL v5200 to power your large LCD display. (Not that this excuses the absence of the port.)

And in the interest of this thread not getting hijacked by any news other than (I ORDERED!!! and I RECEIVED!!!) there are other threads discussing the lack of dvi.

Last hijack: how much is this dock and can you point me to a datasheet for it? Thanks.

Here are some docks and port replicators. They come in different prices based on what computers they support and the kinds of ports they offer.

I haven't used one, but I see people who do, and it's much less of a pain than walking upto a desk and connecting a bunch of cables.

For the record:

I ordered model 2007-94U. The price I was quoted was $3845 by the Lenovo rep.

After negotiating a bit, I got the rep down to $3079 even. With tax, my total became $3263 with free shipping.

My expected ship date is 4/7.

2623DDU - not sure of the exact date the order was placed, I submitted the information to our purchasing people the day it was posted on the web. The AC adpters arrived several weeks ago, and my extra 1GB of RAM arrived on Thursday. Laptop ETA is 3/17.

A week from Friday, it would be interesting to see if you get it then. I heard(I forgot where) that Lenovo will start shipping on 3-21 and I have a feeling a bunch of us will get it at the same time shortly after.

Let me try to find where I got that date....

I'm not ordering anything until I get the unit. If the large battery becomes an issue I would get the smaller one also.

He indicated I received a reduced price of aproximately $30.00 to have it shipped seperately. Why in God's creation is it coming after the machine? I am too exciting to split hairs so hopefully I get the unit this month as estimated.

Would I have had luck given the fact this model is extremely new? I searched 4allmemory.com and the T60 is not listed. Perhaps that has changed since I placed the order. The smart move as you indicated would've been to waite for the shipment and then shopped for memory updgrades.

Crucial has T60 memory. Search the "additional manufacturers" and select Lenovo.
