Is T60p a worthwhile upgrade from a 2.1 Ghz T42p?

I have an opportunity to upgrade, but not if it's worth the time and effort. My T42p has to be the best laptop I've ever had and I'm wondering if anyone has upgraded.

Thoughts?

I'm upgrading from a t40p. For me it wasn't worth upgrading in the t4x line, since there was minor inprovements, little faster cpu, finger reader, hard drive drop protection. The t40p I have has been upgraded to 2 gb ram and the travelstar 7K100 (100 gb) drive.

For the t60p there are some minor changes that I know I use, dual core, more ram (3 gb), bigger screen, bigger graphics card. I don't think the sata has much (if any) improvement over the pata hard drive in performance.

So looking at my warranty, I've had the t40p for 3 years, warranty expires in April.

My experience is that upgrades within the same line seem to be minimal (i.e. t41 to t42), while across lines (i.e. t2x to t4x) are substantial.

The question is there enough bang for you to justify the upgrade. I'm kinda of mad because I have to get all new ancillary equipment, i.e new dock, batteries, chargers, due to the t6x differences from the t4x. So I spent about $600 in addition to the laptop cost.

I am in the same situation. I current have a T42 that is just perfect. My only complaint is that it's not a dual core.

I just got my T60p 2007-86U. So, far I think I'm going to keep the T42 and return the T60p. I've only used it for 15 mins.

First impression:
It's thicker than the T42. Almost 1 1/2" thick. I don't have the T42 beside me to compare more closely. I got the Hydis screen which is a brighter, but the colors are washed out. Not as vibrant when compared to my T42 14" Samsung LCD.

not looking good here. I do a more in depth review when I have them both side by side.

Also the T60 has no S-Video output...

My T42's S-Video output sat unused for a year, then suddenly needed to use it because of company DVD authoring project--glad my T42 had S-Video output...

Your T42p can still pack plenty of punch for a couple of years. Unless you can get a really great deal on the upgrade (like a free one or a huge discount), I wouldn't do it just now.

Also, even if you have the option to upgrade now versus keep the opportunity to upgrade later, I'd wait perhaps for the next generation of laptops (Merom isn't far aways).

I'd keep the T42p as it's a very good machine and you are happy with it. There's no point getting a new machine for the sake of it!

If you're still happy with your T42p, I'd recommend waiting for the first vista-fied T6X model. Especially if you plan to get years of use out of it, the 64 bit CPU, DX10 card, and (most likely) HDCP-enabled DVI will all be very nice enhancements to the current T60.

The way I see it, my T43p was a significant upgrade to my T42p - I have them both.

Based on what I read, the T60p is a further enhancement to the T43p

So A > B > C simple math.

Keeping the T42

Thanks for the replies. I expect the T60 is an excellent machine, but it doesn't offer me enough real difference from my T42p at this point to spend the $$ and go through another system config.

Maybe when the T61 comes out and Lenovo has their supply act together...
