It's not an option on the tabook so you need to find out if any of the old keyboards fit the new system. From what I have heard so far they do not. Why does it really matter? Do you not run Windows? Other OS's still use it. You hate short cuts?

The Windows Key takes up too much space on the bottom chord key row to be useful for some people; my T43, thankfully, doesn't have a Windows key. You can either map a redundant modifier key, such as right Alt, to it via the IBM Keyboard Customizer (which I did), or go into the registry and re-map it there.

I think I'll solve this problem by using a keyremapper, and making the extra windows key more alt keys if possible. Haven't used a key remapper but I think that would be doable with Microsoft RemapKey from Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools:

If the T60 still comes with the ThinkVantage?Keyboard Utility, why not just use that remap the Windows Key? I just checked the latest version that I have on my T43, and it includes the option to remap the Windows Key to something else, including Alt. :)

I read an Ars Technica review on the X60, with users requesting that the reviewer try and place an X41 keyboard into the unit.

The findings? The connectors are completely different. Bummer.
Do you not run Windows?
No, I don't use windows anymore.

Keyboard WITHOUT Windows Key

#8 Post by lophiomys » Thu Apr 19, 2007 6:21 am

It's now about a year since I asked the original question:
Is there an option for a keyboard without the Windows Key
for the T60 and X60 series?
I do prefer to have large CTRL and ALT keys during my daily work,
and would be happy to purchase it as an option for the the T60/X60 series.
My sales rep here in AT say that Lenovo is not offering a kbd without
Windows Key as an option.
Did anyone see such an option available in a different country?

BTW:
I'm running my Thinkpad now with Kubuntu and its working perfectly :)

So you guys don't find the Windows key useful? I use it dozens of times everyday. It saves a lot of time by making it unnecessary to use the mouse to start certain programs or open certain folders. For example, to start Internet Explorer, I hit Windows Key --> "P" --> "I" --> Enter Key. All of that takes half a second. To open the My Computer folder, I hit Windows Key and then "M", and that takes only a quarter of a second.

... amazing variaties of windows key usage, I'm baffeld.
could you tell me what sense this key would make
for an APL programmer, who needs ALT and CTRL keys for special characters,
or simply for the steadily increasing number of Linux users?

BTW:
I was inquiering for an optional keyboard without Windows Key for the T60,
and not really for the amazing plethora of Windows Key combinations.

My post really was intended for all those Windows users who complain about the Windows key just because they don't know how to take advantage of it. I use the Ctrl, Alt and Windows keys equally frequently.

Lenovo/IBM was one of the last manf to adopt the Windows keys, and people complained forever for it not being available.

I think it is now standard on all newly introduced models as going forward with Vista (if anyone ever adopts it) it is almost a necessity. I am sure M$ has something to do with that and may be subsidizing that crazy icon being present on alll manufacturers keyboards.

I would just turn it off, or remap it if you don't like it or don't need it.

2008 - Classic Keyboard as option?

#13 Post by lophiomys » Fri May 23, 2008 7:31 am

Again, more than a year has passed since the last post here.

Any news about a classic keyboard without Windows Key
for the T6x models?

No it's not. Worse, actually. That resource kit makes the changes in the registry, and doesn't require extra software to run. The keyboard remapper from IBM/Lenovo does.

I'd stick with the resource kit's (in fact, I did).

Windows key won't be going away anywhere.

just as an option

I don't want the Windows Key to go away,
I would want to enjoy the freedom to buy as an option
or to CTO-configure
a classic keyboard without Windows Key ,
for a reasonable price.

I used to never use the Windows key, ever. Then I discovered the beauty of Windows + E (My Computer) Windows + R (Run) and Windows + L (Lock Computer). I use it all the time now. (Note: Windows E, R, and L are all default.)
