What a fantastic review!

I just ordered a T60 very close to the
author's configuration, but in the 14" model
(which the author seems to prefer over the 15").

I was blown away by how detailed this review is.
In fact, I'd say that despite a few spelling errors,
this is the best T60 review I have read to date.

I'm at work right now, so I am restricted to not
being able to watch the VIDEO, but I plan on
checking out that video review as soon as I get
back home.

I am soooo excited that I spend the $$$ on buying
the Lenovo. I am pretty confident I will not be
disappointed when it is delivered.

Don't worry about missing that video review because you're at work. Laptop Logic's video reviews are rather boring. Someone talks while the Thinkpad spins on a turntable. It's more reminiscient of a fashion shown than a review

Their print review though, now that is fantastically detailed. I (sadly) had to cut short my reading of it in order to get back to work after lunch. It is on my list to finish this evening though.

I want a new machine badly, and am again on the fence between X and T, so this review is very timely. Last time I went X. This time, maybe, I'll go T. Too bad I can't just get one of each

In regards to the video review, how do you think we could make them better? I agree the T60 one wasn't the most interesting due to us writing the script after the video was shot, so the proper angles weren't always possible; but what would make them more interesting for you all?

It's a really good article. I'm sorry I wasn't more tactful in my comments about the video part. I will go eat crow now.

How to improve the video part? That's a good question, actually. Perhaps show the unit in action. Is it possible, for example, to show off how well and fast the built-in graphics work given that the showing is going to be transmitted over the Internet and rendered on a laptop with shared-video? Perhaps show how fast the unit sleeps and wakes. That's actually an issue w/me. My X30 is not nearly so fast at waking and sleeping as my daughter's iBook. Show off the function key usage maybe? I'm not sure what else. Maybe demo the boot time.

Great write-up! As a noob to Thinkpads, I learned some functions from your article that I had not yet discovered.

Great job Tim!

Only one minor change needed, at the very end of the review you mention the three year warranty. The battery is only covered for one year.

Fantastic review. I'm going to order a T60 as early as tomorrow. My only hesitation concerns the screen resolution. The laptoplogic review raves about the quality of the SXGA screen. I want a 15" screen but am concerned abou the font size. I'm realtively young, and I wear glasses, but no major eye problems. At the same time, I tend to like screen icons and fonts to be larger size just for readability. Based on this, should I just go with the regular XGA screen? Or does it make sense to get the SXGA and monkey with the DPI settings? Doesn't that change the size of text on only some, but not all, webpages? Seems like it really messes up the formatting. Please help. Thanks.

How did you set configure Fn->F3 to blank the screen?

I was able to use that function when I was using my T42p's image on the T60, but since giving up on that and going back to a stock T60 image, I can't get that function back.

p.s. - Since you're in Raleigh I'll give you a heads up -- I've received three T60s so far. All three were sent to IBM on 30' trailers full of T60s before they realized that they had been mis-routed. Fortunately, today someone at IBM was paying attention and caught two of the mis-routed boxes. When I intercepted the first one on the wrong truck the UPS manager said he was glad that I caught it because "this would have been an insurance claim tomorrow for sure."

The moral of this story is to keep a close eye on where your T60s are headed and if they go missing, see if they were routed to IBM. BTW: I've received three T43s and three misc shipments (RAM, accessories, warranty docs) in the same time period and none of those were mis-routed -- just the T60s.

Thanks for the detail not just on the hardware but the software too. I would like to see the same tests with the 7,200 rpm drive. Most reviews seem to have the 5,400 unit. I also would like to see battery results with the 6-cell.

I've been a longtime IBM PC and laptop user and this T60 is impressive. NOT perfect by any means but, nothing is. I voted with my hard earned cash and bought a T60.

We'll keep those in mind. I guess since the videos do just show the laptop itself and focus on a few key parts it gets boring, but really I think the point is just to show what the laptop actually looks like as a whole instead of just through pictures. We'll be crunching on that one and see if we can come up with something neat

The 15" SXGA+ is just fine on my 20/20, even leaning back a bit with it in my lap. I really do LOVE the FlexView screen, the brightness and AWESOME viewing angle are to die for. That said I have used a T43 14" SXGA+; while the res was nice, I wasn't impressed with brightness or viewing angle. If you do go XGA, get a 14" XGA. That way things are a bit smaller and not so "cartoonish." I just despise XGA myself

I asked my gf what she thought of my screen as she has poor eyesight, albeit sees fine up close. She said she didn't find the text too small, she said it was very crisp and clear. You can always turn up the fonts a bit on the SXGA+ too.

I'm trying to remember, I think there was an option menu when you hit Fn+F3 and under that separate option menu you can enable that. If not send me a PM so I can check the T60 before I return it to Lenovo!

To get an idea of how a 7200RPM drive will spice it up, check out my Seagate 160GB 5400RPM review:

It has all the results from my previous 2.5" drive roundup, including the top of the line Seagate & Hitachi 100GB 7200RPM drives.

As far as the 6-cell goes, if you look at my T43 review where I did test every battery you can see a correlation:

The 6-cell's life is proportional to its capacity when compared to the 9-cell. The T60's 6-cell is 5.2Ahr, the 9-cell 7.8Ahr. That's 1/3 less capacity, thus 1/3 less battery life. So while the 9-cell gets 363 min (6 hours 3 min) on the Reader test, the 6-cell should get about 243 min (4 hours 3 min) or there abouts. You get the idea
