So, I'm encoding and burning a dvd using the T60p; which is connected to an external HD and an ext. DVD burner. After I finish burning the DVD, I get a message on the task bar saying, "an unknown device has exceeded power on it usb hub." quickly, I unplug the usb device. I did a forum search and it's come up a couple of times for other people (leads to system board failure).
any ideas on what happened?
USB power exceeded on hub? what?
USB power exceeded on hub? what?
X300 gone... Last of the T61p 14.1"
your usb device used more power than the usb port can supply. you should use an external power supply to power your dvd burner as it cannot get enough power from the notebook's usb ports alone.
edit: i just re-read that. does that mean you are burning the dvd in the ultra bay drive? if this is so, then you probably exceeded the total power your notebook's power supply can supply. Which means the ultra bay burner consumed so much power that there was none or very little left for the USB hub during a stage of burning the DVD. Either power your external drives with their own power supplies, or disconnect them when burning DVDs.
