I've noticed that a lot of people on this forum opt for buying a second stick of memory directly from Lenovo. Obviously this is the most expensive way to go ($199 for 1Gb, as compared to about $150 at crucial, and $100 elsewhere, in all instances for memory that's considered to be good quality).

Why do people make this much more expensive choice?

I've also seen people suggest that's it's best (if you have two memory modules installed) to have them both be the same model from the same manufacturer. Why's this?

I think that to take advantage of Dual-channel (double data rate) mode with DDR RAM, the DIMMs have to be identical... In every way, if possible. Even down to coming off the same production line at the same time (for the pedantic).

This is why Crucial, Corsair, etc. offer matched pairs (2x512MB, 2x1GB sticks, etc.).

Besides the Lenovo memory, which memory should I choose if I want to enable dual channel? Do I have to chose one that has 5-5-5-15 timing?

From what I've seen, pretty much all of these 667 SODIMMs are the same CAS ratings...5-5-5-12, I think.

Go with a name brand value is my rule, man! (i.e. Corsair ValueSelect, though some will curse it)...

IIRC, the pricing from IBM/Lenovo is even more onerous when you stop to consider that the price for "upgrade" is for a single stick of memory in lieu of what the unit comes with from the factory.

Hello, I have t60p with 1 g memory but would like to upgrade. First, how many slots are there available and what are my options. Is the1 gig standard 2 512's in 2 slots or 1 g memory in 1 slot? Also I have heard that i can actually load 4 g of memory. How is this possible if 3g is the max on the t60p? Can you just put in 2, 2 g sticks and it will respond? Also, since I already have one 1g of memory in this computer, can I load a 1.5 or 2g stick or do they need to be paired? Finally, please confirm newegg or any other reputable memory possibiliies via link. Thank you,

Unless there is a config I'm unaware of, you should have 1x1GB SODIMM in your A slot and the B slot should be open. Both slots are located under the trackpad (under the palm rest) and are fairly easy to get to.

I think you could put in a 512 for 1.5GB but the prices are cheap now and with dual 1GB sticks you get the dual channel effect (even if they are not identical, I think).

Well, not really. You could leave the 1gb stick in and then add a 2gb stick for a total of 3gb but that would cost you about $1400 just for the 2gb stick. To get the max of 4gb (still only 3gb useable to the OS) you'd have to replace the original 1gb stick with another 2gb stick for a total upgrade cost of 3k! Or you could just buy another T60p for that and have two machines!

From what I've seen, yes. I did...and it was corsair.

It was broadcast early on in the T60 release that any CTO (even adding a stick of ram) would add weeks to your delivery time. So most (I think) chose to upgrade themselves. There are those who ordered from the factory but they paid the price on delivery (and watched as the rest of us got our machines sooner).

I have used both Corsair and Crucial.

Each has worked perfectly, the only difference I noticed when comparing them side by side, is that the assembly of the Crucial memory module is cleaner and the contacts are very precise. Overall a very noticeable difference.

For my money it's Crucial.

okay, it between cosair and crucial... but looking @ the memory options, it seems that crucial is like 140 for 1 g and cosair is around 90.. Am I looking at the right ones? Could some one post link to each correct memory module for an additional stick on the 1g of memory for the t60p. Thanks!

Why is only 3 of 4GB available to the OS?

I was under the impression that 4GB was the limit for 32bit WinXp and to address beyond that required a move to 64bit processors and WinXp 64.

Are the addressable memory sums different for mobile vs. d'top processors? or is this a CoreDuo limitation?

I hate to push for an answer to a possibly stupid question and if it's a RTFM type of thing please let me know, but why the 3GB limit?

Limitation of the CoreDuo?

no, limitation of the i945PM/GM, from what i have read. Even the BIOS recognizes only 3GB when 4GB is inserted.

I ordered a 1G stick from IBM/Lenovo when I bought my T60p as was charged $139.30.

40Y7734 1GB PC2-5300 CL5 NP DDR2 SDRAM SODIMM $139.30

I guess prices have gone up.
