I need some help with my new T60. I want to install Fedora Core 5 or RHEL 4 -- but I hear that the laptop harddrive has a special parition that has the backup/system files for reinstalling everything? How do I make sure I do not wipe out this partion?
Or what is the easest way to keep the factory installation (which two partitions: WinXP and thinkvantage? ) and repartion the hard drive?
because this is going to be a one-time deal , I don't want to buy any commerical software.
Thanks in advance. I apologize if this has already been answered in another forum: I tried the search feature to no aval.
Repartitioning HD?
I'm dual-booting Windows XP (factory install) and Fedora Core 5 right now. I still have the recovery partition working just fine.
I believe that with most modern Linux distributions you can repartition your Windows partition during the install. I can't speak for sure about Fedora Core 5 as I used SuSE 10.1 Beta 9 to partition my drive. I am trying different distributions and that is what I tried first. I have been reusing the same partition space for all of the installs and tests.
Make sure you do not install the GRUB boot loader on the master boot record (MBR), instead install it on the boot sector on the boot drive for your distibution for example /dev/sda3. In Fedora Core 5 you will have to make sure to check the advanced options on the boot loader setup.
If all goes well you should have access to the "ThinkVantage" button when you boot. If you do install to the MBR then all is not lost, I understand that you can use GRUB to boot to the rescue and recovery partition if you need.
Good Luck,
Joe

Why waste it with stuff that could recover from the system's own HDD? You could just, you know, fill it up with mp3s and....stuff.jwpcweb wrote:According to what I've read, you can restore their silly partition with the restore disc if you ever really wanted to...
I just blew it away and am now running a clean install XP and Vista... I hate thinking that there is 6gb extra I could be wasting.
