Hardware upgrades for T60

#1 Post by sw-rick » Mon Apr 10, 2006 2:04 am

Hi all!

I have just skimmed the hardware maintenance manual for the T60/T60p and looked at the illustrations which describe assembly/disassembly. Obviously it is possible to upgrade both ram and hard-drive. But am I correct that it is also possible to upgrade the CPU? I have just ordered a T60 with the T2400 dual core, but I am thinking maybe to upgrade to a T2600 when the time (and price) is right.

Also, I have not been able to find any info on this, but is it possible to upgrade from the ATI X1300 to the X1400 (or maybe even the X1600)? Is this chip mounted on a socket or soldered to the mainboard?

Thanks,
Rick

Yes, you can upgrade the cpu but you will not be able to upgrade the video without a motherboard replacement.

Does this mean that a merom upgrade would be possible? I read that initially the meroms will be issued with the same chip set as the current yonah processors. And I've read that the merom is supposed to be pin for pin compatible with the yonah.

Ach, I thought as much. Thanks for the confirmation on the CPU anyway!

As I will not be using this notebook for games I hope the X1300 will be decent enough for video-editing, photoshopping and aero-glass (better be, or it will be "single-boot" with a Linux variant for me :-D ).

Cheers,
Rick

Merom should fall right in as soon as the T61 is shipped. It should work just like T40-42 and T20-22 - Merom is going to launch with the same chipset as Yonah, so the boards should be identical as well as the BIOSes. Im not saying its 100% certain, but it is very, very likely.

time will tell, but the idea sounds pretty neat. That way, assuming the t60's cooling solution can handle the merom, you could just extend the life of your notebook.

Technically I think the Merom is supposed to run cooler than the Yonah anyway. I've been searching around since my last post and saw someone raise this question in another forum. So it seems like the heating solution shouldn't be a problem.
