Hi, I am wondering how the wareanty works if I purchased the t60p in the US, but will be moving to Italy for the year. Is there a IBM europe or even better IBM Italy that I can send my thinkpad if there is something wrong with it or do I need to send it back to the US for repair?

IBM warranty service in foreign countries is normally provided by local IBM affiliates -- at least, that is how it has worked for me in the past in Central America and in Germany/Europe. Worldwide warranty service that actually gets the job done is one of the more compelling reasons to spend the extra money and invest in a ThinkPad.

so does this world wide warranty come standard with all t60p?

It comes standard with all new ThinkPads ... the only difference is that the upper-tier models come with a warranty of greater duration (i.e. three years instead of one). All T60p machines have a three year wordwide warranty.

It's also important to note, that the warranty goes with machine not the owner. So if you sell it within the warranty period, there is no need to "transfer" the warranty. The new owner can enjoy the balance of the warranty as though he/she were the original owner.

International warrenty work pretty well. Had a thinkpad go down in Seoul a few years ago, one that was bought in France with a special ordered English keyboard, IBM sent out a tech to the office, then expressed a new motherboard out and install in 2 days.

Perhaps I should have added that my current T41 has been in for service twice over a five-year period here in Germany, and my experience with the German repair center was comparable to the EasyServ experiences I've had back home over the years.

In other words, IBM/Lenovo seems to be one of the few companies out there with the reach and relevance to actually back up a global coverage promise. Sure, you might have to overcome some local language difficulties from time to time, but in the end, you will get the same kind of gold standard service that you're accustomed to back home.

I'm a worldwide traveler by profession, and I just ordered my 7th consecutive (privately purchased) ThinkPad, if that tells you anything. I'm not sure how effective my warranty coverage might have been in Iraq, but everywhere else it's been exceptional.

Just curious, where did you get this T41? I was under the impression that they weren't released until late 2003 at the earliest, but generally 2004. I know that the T40 was released in 2003, but some of the T41s came out the same year. I double checked tawbook.pdf to make sure that I wasn't losing it.

I'm not questioning your statement, per se, but rather just curious if this was a special release or a foreign release since you said that it was in Germany.

Didn't mean to give rise to any confusion here. I've been in Germany for five years, but of course, the T41 has not. I only meant to imply that it's been in for service twice, and I've been abroad for an extended period.

I bought this particular machine from Bill (Morrow) while I was in Baghdad in early 2004. Prior to this, I was using an A31. Apologies for the earlier lack of clarity.
