Does anyone here run VMWare workstation (to run Linux)?

Does anyone run VMWare on their T60/T60P? I use VMWare to run Fedora Core Linux on my desktop (Pentium 4 3.0Ghz Northwood), and I find the performance to be barely acceptable. Does VMware run briskly with the Intel Core Duo 2.0Ghz?

I think you will find the problem is Fedora, not VMware. I run VMware on my 2.8Ghz IBM Desktop and on my 18GHz ThinkPad. It works well on both machines. I have run most of the Windows systems as guests, RedHat 6, 7, 8 and 9 as guests, and SuSE 9 as a guest. I tried Fedora and dumped it in favour of Ubuntu because it (Fedora) was so slow.

The reason you are finding it sluggish is because you are emulating the hardware of a complete system. On top of that you are interacting with an array of server daemons and specifically the X server which is being slow because of the plethora of apps that Fedora includes by default.

I agree ubuntu isnt my first choice for the total newb, but the mid level windows power user can get by.

Try using fluxbox with fedora and remove a bunch of the startup processes in init.

Are you running VMWare workatation, player or server? I am running VMWare player on Windows with a SuSE Linux 10 guest. I get very good performance. I started running VMWare server but I found the performance rather sluggish so I tried running my guest with VMWare player, it was much more responsive.

I first installed VMWare server and configured my guest. Once I had that working I uninstalled server and installed VMWare player. It's a pain but the performance gain was considerable.

I find most guests work fine with VMware Workstation. Fedora was a notable exception and the reasons here seem to provide a clue.

What is a good Linux that will run briskly in VMWare Workstation or Player on the T60/T60P? I have been running Fedora Core 4, but any distribution that has a slick KDE environment would be fine (I hate Gnome). OpenSUSE looks pretty good...

Ubuntu works fairly well - Ubuntu is Gnome; Kbuntu is KDE. SuSE 9 works as well, although it is larger and slower than Ubuntu. I haven't tried the newest version of SuSE. ... JD Hurst
