My T60p died yesterday night. Compared to my T43p I had been pleased that the fan noise was much quieter. Well there was a reason for that, it looks like there was something wrong with fan control mechanism. I never heard the fan kick into high gear, it was always on the lowest setting. So here was I running two zip jobs, marveling at the blistering speed of the duo core, I look down see the cpu temperature monitor jump up to 81C then crash. With the cold reboot, nothing but lovely thinkpad logo. RIP.

Just as soon as I get my data of the hdd, which is a pain as all my other systems are PATA, this Thinkpad is off to meet it's maker. I'm so glad I still have my trusty T30, but boy I do miss the 15in flexview. Going back to the old SXGA screen is a bit of a let down. On the other hand for ordinary computing I really don't feel that the T30 is slow, with a 1Gb of ram is still pretty zippy.

Now what to do with the refund money. Hmm...

I'm very interested in what you choose to replace it with. Is there a reason that you not getting another T60P? I have been trying to decide on ordering a T60P.
I'm always interested in hearing others experiences and opinions.

did you run some fan control software?

you could try a different manufacturer, but then again this doesn't mean their machines have to work as advertised either. I haven't heard of other t60p's dying like that yet. Strange. If it were me I would just regard it as freak accident and get another one. There's always bad apples, no matter the manufacturer (no pun intended).

No fan control software, just a cpu clock and temperature monitor. I think the problem was due to a manufacturing defect. During the week and a half I had it, never heard the fan kick into high gear. All the power settings was set to performance, no settings that would limit the fan.

With regards to it's replacement, I'm still in the hmm... stage.

Also, it actually fun to use my old T30 again. I've normally sold off my old laptops, but for some reason I've kept my T30 and 560Z, and boy I'm a glad that I kept the T30.

Always dangerous to do apples to oranges comparison, but ...

My T42 will get to about 81 or 82 degrees while running Prime95. It will do that reliably for hours.

According to this info from Intel:

the Pentium M can run at up to 100C. I assume that the mobmeter.exe utility is accessing the on-chip thermal diode for this information. If so, then my processor is "loafing" since it's running 18C below maximum.

I haven't found corresponding info for Core Duo chips as used in T60, but I know there are even more advanced thermal management techniques available for Core than for previous chips.

I'm not disputing that your Thinkpad has passed on. I'm just saying that getting to 81C for the CPU was NOT in and of itself enough to kill it.

I set the cpu monitor to poll every 15 sec and the 81C was the last read out before the crash, so who knows what the actual highest temperature was. The bottom of the case was really hot, hotter than I've ever felt before on a computer.

I've burnt a desktop cpu before, the stupid cooler fell off when I righted the case and before I could react, psst it went. Looks like the supposed built in temperature cut off doesn't work as advertised.

FYI My T41 goes regularly to 80-82C when at full load and in room temperature, and nothing weird ever happened.

holy hell, 82C on a 1.4? something is up man, that is WAY too hot

I've never seen a temerature even close to 81C. I think I'll run prime95 to see how high I can get it to go.
