I Got a lemon

I received my 2623DDU. Nothing but problems. :( After using Thinkvantage System update I kept getting the "blue screen of death". The blue screen error message stated "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". This problem occurred rather sporadically, but when it did, it seemed to get stuck in a loop. After the blue screen the computer would automatically reboot. Once windows started again I would get a windows "recovered from serious problem" message, and then shortly after I would get the blue screen again. This would repeat sometimes once and sometime several times. After speaking with tech support, I re-imaged may hard drive (2 times) but still got the same sporadic problem. After spending what I though was an unreasonable amount of time tring to resolve the issue I returned it and order another If the next one gives me problems....never again a Lenovo.

I also noticed a post about the fan speed being low. I wonder if mine had the same problem. When I got it I though "wow this thing is quiet" but now I starting to wonder if I had a bad fan/fan control.

A few possiblities come to mind from seeing this in the past (on non-Thinkpad, desktop machines) ...

(1) Assuming the image was good (which, of course it is, as it's the same image being deployed on all machines of your model), it could be a lemon hard drive -- and thus the image backup has a flaw in it. (Maybe run a chkdsk /f at bootup to see)

(2) A piece of faulty hardware is causing a driver to not load correctly (could be any of a number of components)

(3) While it could be a fan issue (ie, lack of cooling), I, myself, haven't seen this particular BSOD message when it comes to overheating.

In any case, regardless of my speculative thoughts above, you're spot on: return it and get another. This is (hopefully) an isolated incident.

Thanks for the replys...

I allready returned the unit, so I can't try the fixes. In any case, I cannot except having to try and fix BSOD errors for 3 days on a labtop that is brand new and cost as much as the 2623DDU. This was my first thinkpad and I though I was getting a reliable machine. Maybe those days are gone! Hope the next one works flawlessly. Ship date for next 2623DDU is 5/15. Will advise outcome.

I got the same BSOD, but it happened every time it booted from a shut-down state -- i.e, after any reboots including the forced reboot from the BSOD, there would be no more errors. I ran memtest86, no problems with the RAM I added. I then restored to factory and got the same blue screen.

It turns out that the reason was the notebook hardware control (NHC) program. Since it was set to adaptive mode, I presume that trying to change clock speeds right at logon (when all the processes loading up were taxing the CPU) created some kind of conflict. I've been using the default power manager now, and it's been working fine.

Now, there may be some inherent problem with my laptop that just showed up because of installing NHC. But for now, I'm just going to assume it's some sort of a driver/software-driven problem.
