Does the T60P or T60 suffer from any heat problems? I'm particularly interested in the T60P with the 2.0Ghz dual core and the ATI V5200 card, and with/without AC power.

I bought a Macbook Pro, but this thing is extremely hot underneath when plugged into AC.

Same with my T41p. I am used to it but if its better on my soon to arrive T60p, I won't complain..

without checking right now, my T60p (200794U) runs cooler than my T43p (2668Q2U)..

So, how do your guys' T60 perform?

my T60 (2623-d3u) seems to run very cool. Probably b/c the fan is on most of the time. BTW, I'm pretty noise sensitive, and the constant fan doesn't bother me a bit. Runs at only a whisper.

I also have a T43 that gets quite warm, and it's quite bothersome.
My T60 is a real improvement. Runs quite cool and the fan is very, very quite. I belive the engineers must have spent some time focusing on this during development. All the reviews I have read also concur that this is the coolest Core Duo laptop so far.

Check the temps in the lower right hand corner...

Perhaps a better question would be, what are the variations amongst T60 models?

They *should* be the same, but what is the exactly variation that can be expected?

Also, the T60p should have slightly higher temperatures, right?

This T60p runs considerably cooler and quieter that my T43p did. Amazing considering everything that's shoehorned into this case. Graphics performance on large model assemblies is improved and Photoshop runs very well. I'm impressed.

They must have gone with a completely different style of primary fan in this system because the acoustics are dramatically different than on my T43p. In a quiet room that system drove me nuts.

I sent it in to IBM/Lenovo for evaluation for various screeching sounds, fan noise, increased noise levels on battery power, etc. I just got it back and was informed that the system was "IN SPEC" on all fronts. I can't use it so I don't know what to do with it. I sure can't go back to it after sipping from the T60p cup (that doesn't sound right).

Well, they probably did change the fan...although not as much as I suspect. More likely, they changed the insides around a bit and re-organized it. Still...The T43 shared the same setup as all the other T4X Series systems I have seen; that is what boggles me...


Oh, well.

When discussing fan noise and temperature several things need to be made explicit:

1) current and max CPU clock rate
2) current and max GPU clock rate
3) temperature at various internal points
4) integrated GPU vs ATI discrete

Many times people say "I have model 6789-ABC and the fan is loud" but it's hard for anyone else to determine any of the above without some digging. Especially if the model is no longer in tabook.

Why does it matter? Here's an example. I've seen reports that a T60 with integrated 950 GPU gets much better battery life than a T60 with discrete ATI. That means to me that ATI is drawing more power. That means that either temp will rise or fan will speed up and become louder.

So without more details it's hard to draw conclusions. Maybe ATI systems are the only ones that are loud? So people who want a quiet T60 should purchase integrated 950 if they don't have any heavy-duty graphics needs? Maybe, maybe not. More rigor, please.

Is there an application that checks for temp and fan speed preloaded on the T60? Or can someone recommend me one? I'd like to check on my system.

My T60p is much cooler than my T43p. Not a little but ALOT!

I used to sit me coffee/tea cup next to the left side fan outport on my T43p to keep it warmer while I was working. That 2.26 GHz proc was like a little furnace or maybe it was the proc in concert with the ATI GPU that was in that model, but that baby threw some heat. Fantastic machine though and the last "p" model to sport the IBM design & colors. Aesthetically I preferred its look to the 60 particularly the color highlights on the TrackPad buttons. The new metallic sound control and Access buttons are okay with me as a design change,

This T60p never seems to achieve that temp level even on max perf running a filling analysis. I had to dig out my insulated mug again.

You need to get either the Thinkpad Fan Control Utility, the link to the forum is in my sig, or get NHC or something similar.

The benefit of the FCU is that it lets you look at all the temperatures and not just the CPU or battery.

That is my experience as well, even during periods very demanding computing, my T60 is barely warm on the bottom, whereas my T43 was noisey and hot! I is really amazing how much power is packed into the T60 and how quiet and cool it is.

It was recommended somewhere on this site. Maybe on fan control thread. It doesn't show fan speed but I don't need that capability for T42. From reports above it sounds like T60 usually runs much cooler than T43, so maybe fan speed is not important for T60 either.

My girlfriend just brought her new t60 for me to help set up, and it was noticeably cooler than my t43 at all times. The t60 fan also ran less frequently, even though I have mine controlled somewhat by the TP fan control. There were times when the bottom of my t43 bordered on 'hot', but the t60 was never more than 'warm'. These were obviously not scientific tests, but the difference was noticeable, and enough to make me really jealous of her t60.

What I keep hearing is something like the Sonoma chipset produces a lot of heat. That would make sense with the observations here and otherwise.
