DVD Drive question..Which is better?

#1 Post by stephenaron » Sun Apr 23, 2006 1:45 pm

I have the t60p 2007-84U. It came with the UJ-842 DVD drive. Is that the same thing as the ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive that is for sale on Lenovo Accessory page? Is the one i have the best they offer?

As far as I know, what Lenovo refers to as the "Super Multi Burner" is actually either one of two drives - your UJ-842 (Panasonic/M a t s u s h i t a) or GSA-4083N (Hitachi/LG). Specwise and performance wise both should be OK, and yes, it's the best they offer currently.

Blueray and HD-DVD drives are shipping in Japan already, I would guess it will end up in a TP by year end. I would upgrade to those if they are not priced too high, at least initially they are likely to be. The storage capacity is no comparison.

I believe these (Blu-Ray burners) are only available in desktop form factor right now. First they will need to be reduced to standard laptop drive size and then again to the 9.5mm UltraBay Slim size. I doubt that we see that on the ThinkPad anytime soon.

I agree with darren. In addition, I'm thinking that the future of Blu-Ray is not exactly cemented as a well accepted standard in the USA just yet. Who knows how long this might take, if ever? I think Sony will put it's might behind it, however that does not assure long term success. Especially at the pace of technological advancement currently, along with the politics of money, power, and revenue targets.

I've got the Hitachi one. I'm so far pretty amazed by it. It is super silent; I have to put my ear to the drive to actually hear it working. While I've only tested it so far to burn the R&R discs so far, it has performed pretty well. Also did a recovery AND a fresh install from the drive, and it was pretty quick (for a notebook drive).

I do not see this model 200784U in IBM/Lenovo wab page, Is there any other place to look at this model.
