T60 2623 Mac Users First Impressions

I had promised to post after I received my T60 26236DU from CostPlus. The first thing I did, even before I started it up, was to look up the warranty. It lists the warranty expiration in April 2009, so I am assuming it is a three year warranty.

I have owned nothing but Macintosh for work and personal use since 1989. I recently started a business with my brother-in-law that required I use PC specific software (QuickBooks Point of Sale & accounting, some proprietary software), so off to Dell I went. It certainly wasn't the same experience I have had with my Macs.

Since I am something of a computing snob, I chose to go with something better than the stylings of Dell and bought this myself rather than through my business, as I had with the Dells. I have to say that my first impression is certainly a positive one. I haven't had much of a chance to use it yet, and I am certain I will have questions, but so far I am happy.

I will note that the 14" screen is definitely worse than my Macs, but I knew that going in. I am actually rather pleased with the overall appearance of the screen as it sits here next to my Intel iMac. The viewing angle is very restricted, but again I had checked and it was something I am willing to live with. And after having widescreens for the last few years a 4:3 screen looks strange. My only other complaint is the case. After using the Titanium PowerBooks I feel like the case has gone from understated to NASCAR. What's with all the stickers?

I'm getting something of a kick out of the little red stick in the middle of the keyboard (I know it has a proper name, I just don't feel like looking for it). I'm not certain yet how much I like the keyboard, but it feels pretty good, just different from the ones I am used to. And getting a decent finger scan was great fun.

I'm going to have to learn to separate my loathing for Windows (we stole it first!) from my reaction to the hardware. All in all though, this should be fun!

Glad you made the "switch".

The red "nipple" is technically called a "Trackpoint". You'll (probably) learn to love it. It was the main thing I missed when I bought my iBook.

While Mac *Books are "mobile fashion", Thinkpad T-series is just so "corporate ninja".

Congrats on the Thinkpad. I hate to quibble but hopefully you're aware that Apple didn't exactly invent the GUI OS either. I don't really care who thought of what first, to me its who provides the best implementation of a concept. And I will give Apple credit, to this day they still are a leader in that space. I worked at Microsoft for ~5 years and I don't think they will ever provide a consistent UI across their platform, the company is made up of too many diverse and competing groups.

But I digress. Enjoy the Thinkpad, its a great piece of hardware. And surely you know that it is technically possible to run OSX on there right?

I just had to get a T-40 after using the TrackPoint, the touchpad on the iBook just doesn't quite cut it for me.
