Can't get T60 to recognize secondary XP account

#1 Post by NJRonbo » Wed Apr 26, 2006 11:07 am

Something very strange with the T60 that I have not
experienced on other computers under the same circumstances.

I have a crapload of programs slated to start up when
my computer boots. In all, it takes almost 4 minutes for
my computer to fully load everything.

When I travel, I don't need all this stuff loading. All
I need is an Internet connection and a browser.....

...so I had a great idea -- to just create a secondary
account that I can log into that only loads the stuff
I need when on the road.

I went to CONTROL PANEL -> USER ACCOUNTS and
created a new account. Easy thing to do -- I have done
it on other computers.

However for some reason the T60 does not recognize
this secondary account. I can't LOG OFF into it nor can
I SWITCH USERS (there is no option). When the T60
boots up it doesn't go to a menu screen with the two
separate accounts that I have the option of logging in to.

I am sure all of this has something to do with the
security functiuons of the T60.

Anyone have any suggestions how I may be able to
accomplish the tasks I need to?

Thanks in advance!

This sounds like a WindowsXP issue, not a Thinkpad issue. Are you sure that you have the "Fast User Switching" service enabled? If that is not on if I recall that will prevent this feature from appearing available to you.

Yep... Windows setting.

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Users Accounts

Click "Change the way users log on or off"

Hope that helps.

Just to expand upon and explain what's already been mentioned:

When you go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off,
you have two options--Use the welcome screen and Use fast user switching.

If 'Use the welcome screen' is checked, then you'll get the blue 'Welcome' screen with the names of the users on the right. If it's unchecked, you'll get the plain old login box with username and password fields. When it's unchecked, obviously, you'll have to know the actual username you're trying to use, and type it in the Username field.
Both methods will work for you and allow you to use different usernames and accounts.

btw....disable fast user switching. fast user switching is a quick way to eat up memory when you have multiple users logged on simultaneously. and it doesn't sound like you need it either.

Know what the problem is?

As soon as I try the above I get a warning message
that says a recently installed program has changed
the way I log onto this computer. It identifies the
program as:

vrlogon.dll

The two options you guys spoke of are disabled
until I remove this program.

Now I need to figure out which program is doing this.

I have a feeling it might be the Thinkpad logon security
(though I am not using fingerprint login just a password)

A quick search for vrlogon turned up this

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-58845

May point you in the right direction.

I don't have this option in my user accounts settings.

Are you guys on win domains? ...or workgroups?

I just don't see it anywhere... :?
