3DMark06 on T60

I downloaded and ran 3DMark06 build 1.0.2 on my T60 today. WARNING it is a 580MB download!

I didn't do anything at all to optimize my system before running the test. By that I mean that all of my normal start up apps like antivirus, firewall, wireless, security, etc were all running in the background. In addition I was running Mobilemeter so I could track my temperatures. The only difference from the factory load is that I deleted all the Norton security and replaced it with NOD32 and am just using the WinXP firewall.

My T60 is a stock 200768U:
T2500(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

Here are the results:

3DMarks - 747
SM2.0 Score - 209
HDR/SM 3.0 Score - 314
CPU Score - 1587

Comments:
I was getting a high of 5 fps and a low of less than 1 on the tests
My temp spiked up to 71C according to mobilemeter
The fan was running on high the whole time but never made excessive noise

If anyone else runs this benchmark on their T60(p) please post the results here.

First run through on a T60p, 2.16GHz/2GB/V5200 at the standard resolution and settings:

1506 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 537
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 545
CPU Score: 1703

I had the CPU set at adaptive (I leave it there to reduce heat when on AC) so that *might* have impacted the CPU score. I also had my normal complement of crap running, most notably AV.

These were run at the standard clock of 400/325. I tried to run this with the card overclocked to 465/420. It was cooking until the first CPU test where it crashed with an error. I tried restarting but it froze up. If I can get it to run all the way through I'll post again with the results.

OK - Second run. This time I turned off AV, set the CPU to 2.16 fixed freq and OC'd the GPU to 465/420. The results:

1806 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 649
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 662
CPU Score: 1719

The 3D benchmarks are pretty much where I would have expected. The CPU score is interesting -- looks like there was virtually no performance hit for starting with the CPU in adaptive. Cool!

I'm impressed that the V5200 made such a difference vs the X1400 graphics card.

Has anyone been able to confirm the rumor that the V5200 actually has 16 pixel shaders unlocked on the T60p?

PowerStrip from EmTech. It has some bugs with this chipset and the machine locks up frequently when OC'ing, even if the change in speed is insignificant. It has something to do with the act of registering a new speed rather than the speed beind selected so if you make it past the point of changing the speed it will usually run fine. Hopefully this will be fixed in software but the same behavior can be seen when overclocking from ATI Tool.

The latest Beta of ATI Tool supports the V5200 but it causes the lockups more often so I used PS to OC, ATI Tool to probe for max speed by watching for defects and FanControl to watch the GPU temp. The GPU gets squirley above 107 degrees C.

I'm running on a T60p 200786U - 2.16GHz, 1GB, v5200... what could be wrong?? Something to do with the v5200, since the CPU seems to be on par with everybody elses.

Gee, this is the first time that I've used 3DMark for a while, and I gotta admit, gee they've cut back on the freebies, eh? Now, everything is "you gotta pay" to use.

Clock is 398/324

If you're sure about the clock then you seem to have a driver problem. Try uninstalling and reinstalling.

How are you confirming the clock rates?

I'm just using the stock standard Lenovo driver that was installed by Software Installer. The clock rates came from ATI Catalyst Control Centre. I haven't tweaked anything at all.

Just one little question..
How do you get V5200 running at 400/32x MHz?
The clock of my V5200 only read 128/135 MHz.

Your card is running in PowerPlay's low-power mode, most likely because you are running on battery. Plug in AC and see if the figures jump up.

I haven't found any that work reliably. I've had the best luck with PowerStrip but it has a bad habit of locking up and racing the processor. Someone posted than an older version of PowerStrip is good for OC'ing the X1300. I'd like to hear more about that (like what version and where to get it) in hopes that it might work for the V5200 as well.

In the T60 section there is an overclocking thread. It links to the older version (which isnt actually that old). I am using it w/ no problems so far.

Whether AC plugged in or not, the PowerPlay on my machine simply doesn't work at all and it also prevents ThinkVantage Power Management from manage the power of Graphic Card. However, After I remove Catalyst Control Center, it works fine.

ding ding ding! OMG can't believe I didn't think of this... OK will definitely have to retry the benchmark while plugged into AC.

is it safe to run at 465/425? Does it cause the heat to rise to high? I was looking to get alittle more boost to the card but dont want to make it unstable or damage the laptop.
