Hitachi 5400 vs the Seagate 7200 ?
Hitachi 5400 vs the Seagate 7200 ?
my T60 came with the 60GB Hitachi drive. It was noisy until I ran the acoustic control and now its mostly quiet on seeks.
I do hear the 'shhhhhhhhh' sound of whirring air when its running though.
I was wondering therefore, how this would compare to the Seagate momentus 7200 drive?
Does that have whirring equal to or worse than the hitachi?
Does it have loud seeks?
Thanks!

Generally the Seagate drives are known for being quieter than the Hitachi drives. Even their 7200rpm drives are pretty quiet. I have noticed very substantive differences between 5400rpm Hitachi drives and 5400rpm Seagate drives that I've had (the Seagate being considerably quieter). But I don't know how the two specific models you mention would compare.
There are many threads in the forum already comparing these drives. Though I don't think noise level was particularly a point of comparison in what I've seen.

I have been using a Seagate Momentus 100GB/7200RPM SATA(ST910021AS) in my T60(2623D7U),
it is quieter than original Toshiba MK1032GSX(100GB5400RPM).
And I also replaced original Hitachi 60GB/5400RPM SATA(HTS541060G9SA00) with Seagate 120GB/5400RPM SATA (ST9120821AS) in my X60s.

Hey NJ_IT, I'm new here and was just wondering, have you had any other confirmation that the Seagate Momentus 100GB/7200RPM SATA(ST910021AS) works fine in T60p? I'm thinking of getting a couple of these for cloning and just wanted to make sure it would work fine. I got a little nervous over the posts about the 2010 error message on T43s with non IBM HD swap. Appreciate any help you can give.NJ_IT wrote:I have been using a Seagate Momentus 100GB/7200RPM SATA(ST910021AS) in my T60(2623D7U),

But I can expect it will be working good based on result of T60's use.
And 2010 msg was caused by SATA-PATA conversion chip,so this time will be no issue(I believe).
One issue ,Seagate harddrive is not in the list of recommended harddrive for the SATA-harddrive Ultrabay slim adapter.

I would assume the T60 and T60p should have the same SATA controller so if the Seagate works fine in one it should work in the other. So, you didn't have any problems (or error messages) with the Seagate so far in the T60? When you put in the Seagate did you do a fresh install or clone?NJ_IT wrote:I ordered T60P,but not received yet.

I ordered the SATA Ultrabay adapter for HDs. Had any experience with that? Ideally what I'd like to do is clone from the main HD to an identical drive in the Ultrabay that would basically serve as a spare in case of crashes or virus problems. I have used Acronis for another notebook with PATA as well as SATA on my desktop and so far so good. It sure beats re-installing OS and soft.
Do you have an esd for your T60p?
thanks again,
D

Seagate SATA 100GB/7200RPM Harddrive has No issue in previous T60(200764U) in 2weeks and in 2623D7U at least in 3weeks.
Both of C drive image were created by Acronis, not fresh installed.
I also have a SATA Ultrabay adapter for extension of size ,not for clone purpose.
Est ship Date is 5/23.

How did you do the clone w/ Acronis if not in the Ultrabay? I've used Apricorn USB housing for PATA and worked fine. Don't have for SATA. Or, did you create an image on CD/DVD and restore from that? If so, were you able to swap in the new drive and restore image from CD/DVD?NJ_IT wrote:Seagate SATA 100GB/7200RPM Harddrive has No issue in previous T60(200764U) in 2weeks and in 2623D7U at least in 3weeks.

Forgive all the questions but I'm trying to make a decision on buying a couple of drives for cloning. Have you used the Seagate (ST910021AS) in the Ultrabay with no problems? I realize it was for storage, not cloning.
BTW, if you are in the market for another Seagate I may have a good tip for price. Thanks again for all the help, DenTP4rm

I always restored C drive image from external USB Harddrive when T60 was in booting process by Acronis bootable CD in the Ultraslim bay, not from CD/DVD image disc. How did you do the clone w/ Acronis if not in the Ultrabay? I did not try ST910021AS to use in SATA harddrive ultraslim bay adapter.
And maybe I will not try it for the time beeing, because I expect it to be only a main C drive , avoiding unknown risk in adapter(outside of recommended vendor )

Thanks, NJ_IT. Can you tell me what kind of external USB enclosure you used? I've used Apricorn USB 2.0 w/ PATA interface on another notebook and worked fine. It is for PATA and has USB2.0 and Firewire interface to PC. Very small form factor.

I don't think I can get the momobay in the U.S. but I was wondering, if that's PATA how did you clone with it, since the ST910021AS is SATA? Did you save an image or clone to the PATA drive then use that to restore or clone back to the new SATA in the notebook's main drive bay? Again, sorry about all the curiosity, but, I'm just trying to get a handle on how to do this.NJ_IT wrote:I used [momobay] which bought during business trip in Japan. Also, you said you hadn't put the ST910021AS in the Ultrabay adapter as it was (outside of recommended vendor ). But is the ST910021AS within the recommended vendors for SATA drive for the T60 main drive?
Thanks again,

After C drive image is created in extarnal USB harddrive(PATA) by Acronis, Just try to restore the image from USB harddrive(PATA) into new main C drive(SATA) in Acronis booting.
I never tried [Clone],just create back-up C image.
As for SATA ultrabay adapter, someone reported Seagate momentus SATA 120GB/5400RPM did not work in this adapter(it was not recognized by adapter),so I do not want to try it.

Hey NJ_IT, thanks for all the details. That's what I needed to know. If you haven't seen it, Apricorn (www.apricorn.com) has a SATA upgrade kit that will hold a notebook drive and connect via USB 2. See http://www.apricorn.com/product_details.php?ID=498 I've used their drive kits for cloning from PATA with no problems and assume it should work with SATA as well. I clone directly to the external drive. I usually boot with an Acronis CD 8 boot CD.NJ_IT wrote:>DenTP4rm

This saves the step of having to creat an image and then restore the image back to the main drive. Also, I usually partition my drives and the cloning helps to copy that in one step. On my PATA notebook once the clone is done I just swap the drives, let WinXP recognize the cloned drive and with one reboot I'm back in business.
With the Seagate incompatability issue it sounds like it might be better to go with just Hitachi drives. Once again, appreciate all the help. DenTP4rm[/url]
