You press the rectangular button on the upper left side of the keyboard at the beginning of the boot sequence about once per second until you see Rescue and Recovery start to load. I believe this button is called ThinkVantage on the T60. I have a T42, and it is called Access IBM on it.

Try pressing the F11 key at the beginning of the boot sequence to enter the Rescue and Recovery workspace.

If you had made a Rescue Media CD you could boot up from that. I suppose you can't get into Windows to make one now.

If you had made the Product Recovery Disc set, you could restore the factory software with it.

You can buy the Product Recovery Disc set from Lenovo (about $50 US I believe).

If you have access to a computer with CD burning software that can make a bootable CD, download PC Doctor for DOS, burn the CD, boot up from it and run the diagnostic tests.

Even better would be to run hard disk diagnostic and testing software. You need a USB floppy drive to boot from to use it though. There is probably a way to make a bootable CD or bootable USB key, but I am unfamiliar with the procedure. Both Hitachi and Fujitsu have this software available for download. Other hard drive manufacturers probably do as well.
