Wireless working perfectly but not with "Access Connect

Wireless connections work perfectly via the windows built-in connection software. But not at all with the Thinkpad Software.
Upon opening the software and creating a new profile (ensuring that windows built in software is disabled as i'm doing this), I then select the "wireless lan" and see that my intel pro 3945ABG is selected and so i hit next. And then clicking "find networks", I simply get the message "no networks found". I know for a 100% fact that several networks exist, as if i re-enable the windows built in, the networks are detected and i can connect without problems (via standard windows connection software)
I'm running a t60p with an Intel Pro 3945ABG, no problems with any devices, no other connection problems or drop outs that i'm aware of, just this software.
It is the 4.12 version of the software. I've uninstalled the access connection software and reinstalled, run the software updater, everything, and still it cannot find any networks.
I've tried typing in the actual SSID of the network, and then, without being able to fill in any of the other details like security drop down etc (because they are empty) I hit next and the program crashes citing a gui error.
This is frustrating me to no end. Have i overlooked something so simple?
