Games Crash with T60p video card

I have tried 2 games with my T60p (2007C8U):
Doom 3 and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

both of them crashed within 2 minutes of gameplay

GRAW got blue screen with Memory Parity Error
Doom 3 got MS error report with error in atioglgl.dll

games ran in meduim setting

crashes occured in game when new areas of the game loaded, like walking thru a door or expirencing heavier gfx loads.

i have also noticed short pauses in rendering/play upon loading, is this normal?

this is out of the box testing, with the most updated gfx driver using thinkvanatage system update

what in the world is going on???

I've tried Doom 3 on my T60 (2623-D7U). I've installed all the latest drivers and what not and the game runs fine.

I have it set at medium settings, 1280x1024 and I have a 2Ghz cpu with 512mb ram. The only problem I have with Doom 3 is that after loading new levels, there is major lag time for a few seconds and then everything returns to normal.

You might want download the latest drivers, maybe that'll solve your problems.

during this lag time (in game) this is when the game crashes

i have the latest drivers

I experienced this with both the demos of Quake IV and Doom III. (Which I guess is reasonable considering it's the same tech.)

I am guessing if you replace the FireGL drivers with the more mainstream ATI drivers things will be fine.

Is your fan running and the GPU isn't overheating?

Other option is buggy display driver which is also quite possible considering it's a driver made by Ati... Try Omegadrivers instead: www.omegadrivers.net

ok I have tried the drivers from ATI.com for the FireGL V series.

They will just not install! Message being, you dont have compatible hardware/software blah blah blah. (tried everything including in safe mode).

The drivers for ATI at Omegadrivers are for the Radeon series.. they have none for FireGL V series..

Something is definitly wrong here. It should work fine out of the box, with the most update driver that was specifically created for this model computer.

Fan is running.. GPU is not over heating.. I have done no overclocking.. This system is 2 days old out of the box..

Do DirectX9 games run fine on your T60Ps? With the same ATI drivers installed from thinkvantage upgrade.. if not this must have a defected gfx card, and I need to return this

Omegadrivers work with FireGL cards also.

the Omegadrivers worked... no more crashes

I might want to give these a try as well. Can you be more specific where you found those "Omega drivers"? The ATI drivers/download area didn't yield any hit when I searched for "omega".

I use DriverCleaner, an video driver removal utility, to completely clean out all the ATI drivers before I install Omegadrivers.

1. Download/Install DriverCleaner

2. Uninstall ATI drivers using add/remove software from control panel

3. Reboot in safe mode, open DriverCleaner

4. Use CabCleaner to clean out the cab files

5. Switch back to DriverCleaner, Select ATI to clean all ATI drivers

6. Reboot in normal mode, install Omegadriver

Complete cleaned without previous driver residues.

Hey "ehsu",
Thanks for the step-by-step. I have one question. Following your link to the Omegadriver site I could only find one file as of 5/29/06 "Radeon Omega Drivers 3.8.252 (Catalyst 6.5)". Will this driver work for the ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 in the T60p?
thanks,
DenTP4rm

Hi Den,

Sorry, I don't have a T60P so I cannot confirm your question. Based on previous posters in this thread, you will find posts confirmed that OmegaDriver works with FireGL cards.

Sorry, that didn't help much. May I suggest that there are other forums that maybe helpful. You can also give them a try too. Good luck.

Hey ehsu,
Thanks for the quick reply. I guess what I'm asking is, when you say "OmegaDriver" are you referring to the driver at the link you placed in the earlier email, i.e. http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php ? I'm not familiar with the site and I couldn't find any other drivers specifically for mobile cards. Is it a one-driver-fits-all deal?
thanks,
Den

I'm running into the same problem, using ati drivers from lenovo site.

T60p 2623. Running TCAW and Elder Scrolls 4 both hang after 5-10 mins.

I haven't tried moving to the omega drivers, but I was assuming this was an overheat issue. Was thinking I'd try prime95 to rule out cpu overhead, but given the amount of heat I was getting off the laptop I think it was more GPU than CPU related.

Does anyone know if Omega drivers are underclocked?

Yes, the GPU is the hottest component in these T60s. Have you tried running ThinkPad FanControl while you are gaming (best if you can run the game in a window)? It would be interesting to see what temps you are getting.

Interesting app - running T43 .18 I get the following reads:

CPU 55°C (0x78)
APS 43°C (0x79)
PCM 44°C (0x7a)
GPU 70°C (0x7b)
BAT 36°C (0x7c)
BAT 34°C (0x7e)
BUS 51°C (0xc0)
PCI 55°C (0xc1)
PWR 53°C (0xc2)

This is not gaming, just normal use. Others seeing similar numbers?

I'll try gaming in the next few days and see what I hit.

Wow, I didn't realise the T60p would be so much hotter on average than my 2007-63U (2.0GHz, X1400) -- my numbers (idle on AC, @office) added above.

guyz ... T60P owners .. plz we need help with this serious problem .. I'm tring my best to solve this problem and i hope u do the same ..

I used the step-by-step solution by ehsu and it just delayed the crash ... before it was from 5 to 10 minutes now it's between 15 to 20 minutes .. and i'm sure its not heat issue .. i tried the latest drives by ATI and also Omega .. and my system is up to date for all drivers including direct X and thinkvantage ...

and those who are intersing to know the gaming expirince of T60P..

1) for BF2 .. i played high details with 1024X768 resolution .. guess what ?? IT WAS PERFECT !! no lag, very nice details the only problem is the crashing ..

2)for BFME2 .. also ultra detalis with 1024X768 resolution .. lttle laggy but playable .. but also still crashing.

p.s. sorry for my english language

actully i think the best way is to replace the FireGL drivers with Redeon drivers .. but unfortunatly all the guides that i found were for older FireGL cards and using old programs..

if someone would mind to place a guide how to replace the current FireGL drivers (v5200) with redeon (x1600)..

thanx in advance

If every game crash, it could be a memory issue. Download Memtest86+ http://www.memtest.org/
It's an iso, you burn a CD and boot on it. It will start memory tests... If any error, it's an memory issue.

Do you have updated your games with last patchs ?

Yup, you are correct. The omega driver is the "one-driver-fits-all" deal.
