Cannot get Palmrest reinstalled

I'm on the verge of taking my T60 to a computer repair shop because I CANNOT get this freaking palmrest reinstalled after putting in 2 gigs of RAM. Please help. I have read the other threads which have not been terribly helpful. Thanks in advance

Ok, I got it basically to fit with a gap on the right side. I put the screws back in all except for one that wouldn't screw in. The RAM I installed is working fine and none of the buttons appear to be sticking. It's possible that a little movement in the trackpad/point buttons has been created. Should I still take this thing to a repair shop just to ensure that there won't be problems with the keyboard etc.?

Also when the notebook is closed I can press down on the lid a little and there is some give. It pushes back into the original position after pressure is released. It's just a tiny bit of movement. Is that normal or could it reult from shoddy reinstallation of the palmrest. Thanks.

It takes some fiddling to get it re-installed correctly. I've opened up four T60's so far, and one of them took a couple extra minutes to get the palmrest installed correctly. It usually works best to install the front end first, then work on getting the tabs inserted into the slots at the sides near the bottom row of keys.

This is probably the result of not having the palm rest reinstalled correctly with the front edge "seated" against the bottom half.

So far I have done 6 machines and one was a bit of a challenge so I know what you are up against. Just be patient.

If you remove the screws and start over, jiggle the piece a bit until it is seated (front side in first) then the screw holes will line up properly and you will be able to put all the screws back without a problem. Just be careful as they do not need to be tightened very much. Just snug.

I was worried about this issue as well when I installed more ram on my 2623D6U. It took me several tries but I think what really helped me was being very patient and gentle. Getting my palm rest to go in didn't involve too much physical coaxing as I thought it would.

My first attempt did exactly what everyone else reported problems with; there were portions of the palm rest that did not get seated. The challenge for me seemed to get both the front and back end of the palm rest seated and locked in at the same time. It was extremely easy to get one side in but then the opposing side was skewed and couldn't be pushed in.

What worked for me was this. I could easily get palm rest closest to me positioned and locked, but could not get the portion near the keyboard lined up while this was seated. However, I could get one half of the front to go into the correct position only leaving one corner sticking up (for me I let the front right corner sticking up. To get this corner to go in, I only applied slight pressure on that corner and the adjacent corner closest to me to get a small upward bowing effect. While I applied this pressure to bow the middle of the palm rest upwards I was able to slip that final corner under the tab at the keyboard. This process for me worked rather well and didn't take much force. All the srews went back in without drama and the palm rest is as it was from the factory.

I would just reccomend being patient annd not getting aggressive. For me it did not require any tools, prying or much pressure to get the palm rest in. If what you're doing is not working try a different approach

hey all, just wanted to thank this forum for helping me install extra ram on my T60. i was really scared that id mess up the palm rest too but everything worked out great. took me 15 min finish the upgrade. for the palmrest reinstallation i just lined up the front and worked my way to the back side tabs. hopefully i wont have to open up my laptop again i think i got lucky good luck with the other people upgrading their T60s

I just upgraded my 200783U to 2gb and had a bit of a challenge with the palmrest myself. I had no problems with the 2613EDU previously. Anyway what I found is that the right side would not sit flush where it meets the keyboard. Since I still had the 2613EDU handy I tried swapping palmrests... not a palmrest problem. What it turned out to be is that the right side of the keyboard needed to be pushed back further back toward the LCD. Then the palmrest fit fine. I think only 4 screws need removing for the palmrest (memory upgrade) .. the 5th is for the keyboard and wireless card. So if you only remove 4 screws, the keyboard probably doesn't move. If you remove all 5 screws you might have reseat the keyboard so its not in the way of the palmrest.
