Over-ride TCP/IP settings in "Access Connections"

#1 Post by RainerK » Fri May 19, 2006 5:36 am

ok very simple, I'm not sure if anyone will have a solution for this, but i'm out in a job site in a remote place of thailand, so i don't have a chance to contact IBM support.

I have to switch between wireless locations at the site regularly, each with differing TCP/IP setting requirements. Now logically the "over-ride TCP/IP settings" is the perfect solution for this. However it seems that i will only override the DNS settings and not the IP.

Strange...In particular when i come from a DHCP (automatically assigned IP) into a statically assigned ip network, i check my TCP/IP settings in windows to see that is has correctly over-ridden the DNS settings, but it has left the IP settings as automatic.

any ideas?

I have used static IP's before. When you set up a new profile, and go into Advanced settings, you should be able to set a static IP. Perhaps you are not Administrator, or perhaps Access Connections has not been set to "Allow Windows users without administrative privileges to create and apply profiles" ... JD Hurst

Hmm. Worked for me. Admittedly I only have one profile setup for my WiFi adapter, but I was able to enter the IP settings manually as well as the DNS settings for my Home Network.

Check the following. Go to Start > Connect To > Show all connections. Right-click on the wireless adapter and choose Properties > Wireless Networks tab, and uncheck box to Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.

You have to be logged on as adminstrator to change the TCP/IP settings.

WINS preferences

#4 Post by onix » Fri May 19, 2006 5:50 pm

I have a related problem where the WINS Sever preferences do not get updated properly. In the office I'm inside an MS network and need specified servers; when I go home I want these server addresses to be removed, but they don't seem to be.

I'm definitely an administrator, and the use windows to configure check box, is definitely unchecked.

It seems like some kind of bug, rather that some setting, because it changes the DNS settings, but not the IP. Or the case of onix, it doesn't change the WINS server preferences.

I might chase up IBM support on it.

I just tried mine again to create a different profile with a different static IP Address and different DNS Addresses. It worked fine for me. You might want to try and repair your TCP/IP stack (Winsock2).

Another possibility I suppose is that your wireless adapter/driver is causing the problem. This is just a guess. I don't really know if that could cause your problem. FWIW, I am using the Intel 2200bg wireless adapter, with IBM/Intel driver version 9.0.4.8.

If it's a matter of resetting your TCP/IP stack, open a command window and enter:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

(although I don't know whether that's the issue.)

Also - make sure that you have disabled "best available network" in the connection type. You need to select either a wired lan OR a wireless connection because you can only configure IP settings for a single adaptor.

I had the same issue you are having, and doing this fixed it.

Ok i have looked at all your suggestions, tried flushing the ip, and i can also assure that Best Available Network is NOT selected. And yet i still have this problem.

Strange that it is JUST the IP that it refuses to overwrite, all other settings, such as file and print sharing, even the DNS addresses within the tcp/ip override options, it updates, just not the IP.

Did you try the procedure at the bottom of the Microsoft Support document I provided the link to above? If so, did you reboot after deleting the registry keys (as instructed)?

Note that the netsch command that redburgundy provided is good to try first, but it is not as complete a repair as the procedure provided at the bottom of the Microsoft Support document.

redburgandy's command didn't seem to work,

I did not read the entire Microsoft Document, only the top!! My apologies.

I followed the procedure at the bottom, and now its working fine.

Thankyou all for your help

I lie...it worked the first time, and then subsequent changes between locations, it stopped working...

You might have some sort of spyware or virus causing you problems. Try running some spyware and virus scans in Windows Safe Mode. Spybot is an excellent free antispyware utility.

#14 Post by a_d_y_a » Mon Jun 05, 2006 8:41 am

this works for me when i am faced with same issues.

Right click wireless connnection and then disable it. Then enable it again. Then reconnect using your AC profile. It will work.

I use a number of profiles in Access Connections and in particular have one for Work and one for homewired. The locations use the same IP address range but different IP settings for DNS and default gateway. In both locations I'm using a static IP address for the Thinkpad - On my new T60P I noticed that the default gateway setting was not being overidden by the Access Connections setting (by checking in Windows TCP/IP properties) despite Access connections showing it as overidden. This is despite Windows being configured not to manage my Network connections.
I also noticed that after upgrading my T42p to the latest version of Access Connections I get exactly the same problem on that. Is this a bug or feature change in the latest version of Access Connections?
