GPU 80c while gaming and still only ~3200 rpm

#1 Post by festher » Fri May 19, 2006 2:34 pm

i played some COD2 on my T60p today and ive got fancontrol running. what supriced me was that around 80c it was still only running 3200 rpm. i think there is a problem with either fancontrol or or bios or a mix.

these are my are levels in fancontrol.ini:

Level=40 0 (0 rpm - fan off)
Level=50 1 (below 3000 rpm)
Level=55 2 (same)
Level=65 4 (~3200 rpm)
Level=70 128 (fancontrol swhitch to bios-mode)

Ive noticed when i start the game, in this case call of duty 2, that the fan speed goes up a bit. This could indicate that fancontrol goes from level 2 to 4. shortly after, it goes down again and then way up, and i think this is when the GPU pass 70c and switch to bios-mode, which probably switch the fan to max speed ~3900. This is all fine, the problem is that the fan speed lowers the speed again to around 3200rpm and when i quit COD2 the GPU is around 80c+ with the fan only running at 3200 rpm. Thats kinda weird. does anybody know how the bios control fan speed vs. heat? how hot will the GPU get before the bios put the fan on max?

thoughts?

After a few tests i found a solution, so now i runs like i want it to. The problem is the "Level=70 128" this line is meant to do the following.

"Disable fancontrol - let bios take over" the problem is that the bios dosent take over very well, atleast the bios "thinks" everything is fine and lower the fan to 3200 rpm where i would think at 80c+, max fan speed is a good idea. Either the fall back feature is causing a problem or else its the bios that dont think higher fan speed is needed just yet.

anyway i removed the "level=70 128" or rather edited it to "Level 70 7" that way when heat reaches 70+ fancontrol wont let bios take over but simple continue cooling in max speed until 65c is reached.

Level=40 0
Level=55 1
Level=65 4
Level=70 7

You can run some test your self. what you'll see is that everytime you push the GPU passed 70c, fancontroled is disabled and well, thats that, and it will not be enabled again.

Another issue, which is not as easily fixed unless you wanna change the MaxReadErrors value is that whenever it counted 10 "Warning: Can't read Status (possible conflict with other software)" fancontrol close down and will not enable automaticly again. and this seems to be unavoidable.

anyway, saying fancontrol is working is a little bit early imo
